I think you really need to think about what you want to teach your daughter in terms of modesty. Several other people have stated that it's not now that you need to worry about bikinis, but when they are older. As a mother of a 15 yo daughter and 17 yo daughter I have to tell all of you that what you let them wear now is what they will wear when they are older. If you don't want her to wear bikinis when she hits puberty then don't let her wear them now. Modesty has to be gently taught when they are young and not suddenly forced upon them when they are older.

I have a 5yo niece and she wears a bikini in the pool. I guess we never thought about it being inappropriate because we don't have the mind of a paedophile or an overprotective mother. If she's at a party with 40 other kids with supervision,I don't see the problem. What 5 year old boy is going to notice whether she's wearing a bikini or a tracksuit? Let her wear her bikini. She'll feel special, the boys won't notice and the mother's that comment need to pull their heads out of their a...sand.

At this age I don't see how it could be inappropriate. Let your daughter wear what she is comfortable in and what will stay put while she swims and plays. If she's worn the particular two piece before and you know it's fine, then go ahead and let her wear it. If she hasn't, then do a trial run at home to make sure everything stays covered and it doesn't move around or ride up on her chest while she's playing. "Bikinis" made for 5 year olds are totally different than the ones teenagers or adults wear.

It depends on the bikini style. I was shopping with a friend today and I could not believe some of the stuff they had in the 18 month to 6x sizes. OMG. String bikinis are a bit much for anyone much less a toddler. But there are 2 piece styles that are cute and cover enough to be decent and that's what she picked up for her girls.

It really depends where you live and how society percieves it.
In some more conservative places, wearing a bikini isn't like a baaaad thing (for teens), but if relatives etc. see you, they won't have a great impression of you.
However, even in this fairly conservative societies I speak of, having a little kid where bikini's is perfectly fine. In fact, people consider it cutesy because it's not like the 5 yr old is trying to put herself on display or attract any wrong attention is she?
Hence, I really think it's perfectly fine.

I dont think its a problem at all. I would let my daughter wear a bikini to the party.... its all what you beleive in and what you want for your child. If your child wants to wear a bikini, let her wear it. My daughter is 8weeks old and I cant wait to let her wear a cute little bikini if that is what she wants. Its when they get older you really have to watch it! Right now they are so sweet and innocent!

There is nothing wrong with a 5 year old wearing a bikini. She is a child. The woman has issues. I found a cute 2 piece bathing suit for my 4 year old over the winter and I cant wait til its warm enough to go swimming. She has matching sandals and a purse. She is so cute in it.

Well, I personally held out against bikinis for a long time. I just don't see the need for a small girl to expose more of her little body than necessary, for sun-protection and modesty. There are a lot of moms like me, one of whom you overheard, who buy tank suits for as long as they can get away with it. That said, I did finally give in and let my daughter wear a tankini (still not very revealing) last year at age 7.

Were is this world going? My daughter is in kindergarten and all her friends wear the little bikini. SHE'S FIVE. She can not wear anything. I guess the mother thinks babies shouldn't wear diapers i the pool too because there tummy is showing. definatly she CAN wear a bikini.

I'm okay with a 2-pc. swimsuit when swimming with family. Around others, not so much. You never know how other people are looking at our children these days. *We* know we aren't sexualizing them, and they just look so darned cute in those little suits! But... :shivers: I don't want to give others a chance to look at my child in any kind of sexual way. That said, I'm sure that a real pedophile would sexualize any child they chose to, regardless of how they are dressed, but I would prefer to avoid giving any overt opportunity. I wouldn't make that decision based upon some random class mom's opinion, though, but on what I feel is best for the well-being of my child at the time. I hope this makes sense!!
