I grew up being taught that the Ten Commandments were THE rules to be followed. However, I see so many accusations of sin that don't involve breaking ANY of them. So, here's my question: If the Ten Commandments aren't the rules to follow, then why did God waste his time with them anyway?

I don't mean to be rude, but I have been told that wearing pants and cutting my hair is a sin. So, please explain to me how that means that I'm not loving God, or my nieghbor?

Anyone reading the ten commandments will recognize them as the moral codes written into everyone's hearts, thus no one can claim they did not know God exists.

These codes were recast by Christ, when he stated that the two most important things were to love God with all our hearts and love our neighbor as ourselves. Violations of these two cover all the sins you refer to in your question.

I'm sure they made sense at the time for a nomadic group of Hebrews. And not surprisingly, they include several rules that other groups of people have decided on, Hebrew or not: don't steal, don't kill other citizens, keep your family intact, etc.

Some people stop right there and say "See? These are good rules. We should post them in schools." But just look at some of the others: "no other gods before me", "don't take the Lord's name in vain" (which does not necessarily cover saying "God damnit!", contrary to popular belief), "keep the Sabbath day holy", "don't covet thy neighbor's wife", "don't commit adultury". Why do these belong in a school? For that matter, why should i make these my rules, considering that I'm not married nor theistic?

The rules are NOT universally applicable, even if we take out the direct God stuff. To give another example: there are native Aboriginee tribes in western Australia who do not have a concept of personal ownership. You give them a t-shirt, and it becomes "their" shirt. So "thou shalt not steal" is not applicable to their system.

For that matter, the Ten Commandments aren't the same for every sect. They vary slightly between some different sects. So it begs the question of what precisely you consider "The" 10 commandments to be.

The Ten Commandments are in the Old Testament. Jesus came to earth to die for our sins because he knew that not one person could keep them. Once you are born again (saved) you are then judged by faith. It is the ones who refuse the Gospel of Jesus Christ and don't get saved who are the ones who will get judged by the Ten Commandments. If you have ever stolen, lied or committed any act of sin and you have never repented those sins to God and asked Jesus to come into your heart, you don't stand a chance. This is the reason that you have born again Christians out there witnessing all the time. They don't want to see anyone end up in hell.

Jesus said that the Ten Commandments are summed up in the following Two Commandments:

1) Love God with all your heart;
2) Love other people the same way you want to be loved.

If you try to do all things according to love, and trust Jesus, all other things should pretty much fall into place.

Ten commandments are common moral code applicable to all people at all times. It was written at a time when life was not so complicated.Later Jesus comprised all these into two important rules: Love god with all your hearts and love your neighbor as yourselves.
It is not possible to include all the violations.God did not waste his time.It was written by people who thought these general laws would govern normal persons lives.Any one who wants to lead a good and peaceful life these guidelines will help.

there are some churches that make up rules. for dancing, swimming, dress code etc.

these are not part of the ten commandments and are simply traditions of men. if they do not allign with the word of God. they are false.

not knowing what "sins" you are talking about it would be foolish to say what the intentions are of the people who are confronting you with the restrictions.

the ten commandments are still in effect. only the blood sacrafices were fullfilled when The Christ was crucified.

if you are stealing, committing pre-meditated murder, knowingly dating a married person, etc. you are definately sinning.

The Ten Commandments are rules that God has given us to follow. They are the important rules. Of course there are also other ways of life that are in the Bible for us to try to follow as well. These ways of living actually help us in our life - eg. to forgive - this helps us in our relationships immensely.

God also gave us free will. It is our choice whether we choose to do the right thing each day. God forgives us though. He is a loving and forgiving God.

The old commandments proved the sinfulness of man, and pointed out his need for a redeemer, as no one was ever saved by them.

They still do, but in their present form, tempered by God's grace and mercy, through Christ and his new covenant church, they now have the potential to help one attain spiritual perfection, rather than condemnation.

As for all the confusion about what does and doesn't constitute authentic sin ... please take that matter up directly with "the boss".

God does not care what you wear, unless it is slinky. All sin must be dealt with by Jesus Holy spirit. The 10 are to be followed. but the bible says all fall short of the Glory of God, so we do the best and rely on Jesus holy spirit and Grace to help in weakness. And don't listen to any person about what they want or there opinion, read the bible and know what your God requires and tune out the Quack coming out of your loved ones. A prophet will have no honor in his own house. Jesus said it!
