Yes, I know about the 3 steps. I also know they are only allowed to use a small stick.

Terry G. Yes, some christians beat their wives. But they know the Bible does not sanction it as the Qu'ran does. My question is under what circumstances can a husband lay his hands on his wife? I did not say 'beat'. Does each man decide for himself when it's okay or are there specific rules as to when?

Not in arabic. The translators used the harshest form possible for this verse, for some odd reason. The other 5 times it's said in the Quran, it means to leave the area or home. Nothing to do with beating. Look up the arabic word "daraba" and then look it up in the Quran online if you can. You will find that it in no way means to strike your wife. And another thing, the wife, according to the Quran, has the right to divorce him if she fears harm or cruelty from him. I am pretty sure getting beaten is "harm or cruelty".

I am so sick of this question. Muslim men are allowed, under certain circumstances to lightly punish their wives. These circumstances are very specific. Does it really happen? I am sure it sometimes does. But, do Christian men beat their wives? You better believe they do! And often for lesser offenses. Would my Muslim husband ever hurt me? LOL!!! Not in a million years! He is not a violent man and if for some reason he chose to be, he would find how quickly I return the favor.
You can hate Islam all you want, that is your right. But try to find a REAL argument instead of this pathetic one. Christianity is no better and has as many faults as Islam.

he cant beat her"whenever he wishes"
take it this way, consider a normal working muslim woman nowadays or in olden days,if the husband hits her even if lightly,he has no right to do that and its a very very serious sin to hit a defenceless person, especially a woman and that too your wife....not only by law but acc. to islam too
but i mean, not all woman are like that..sometimes a muslim woman might cross the boundaries then he must first tell her not to do it,advise her ,warn her,not jump on her and start hitting her...
but suppose she goes out with some other guy or does something bad like that or even if she does something not legal in islam, then he might, and i mean might, not must, hit her,but believe me when i say that happens but not often

He may be waiting to be in 'heaven' where he can find perfectly 'pure' women who won't cause him any trouble.
Amazing ... he had a mother, didn't he. And the Earth is heaven .. ever seen it from space?
Sorry!
