Then why do the earliest documented forms of religion, practiced by early mankind, involve the worship of a pregnant "great mother" goddess and hunting/animal fertility rituals? Shouldn't the earliest signs of religion point to the judeo-christian god?

Tracy -- that's all good and fine, but why don't we see early evidence of the judeo-christian god? I'm not asking whether its wrong or not. Read the question.

Since its been proven that the creation tale is just that...a tale, you have to look at the "god aspect" from a sociological perspective. When the earliest primitives developed their god concept, they had to go with what they knew. Given their knowledge of the world, they were created by a goddess, not a god.

If you look into other religions, you'll see a similar sociological trend. Native Americans accepted that they were a part of nature, not above it. Thus, they recieved their messages from animal totems, and a supernatural extension of the natural world. Patriarchal societies leaned toward male theistic tendencies.

"Earliest" anything is not proof of anything. Should the earliest gun be the best gun ever? Could have been, but that (the quality of being the first) is not the test is it?

At any rate, religion developed later. You are right in assuming that Adam and Eve did not have a religion, they just worshipped God. Like anything else we see, things do decay, so yes worship of God decayed into religion and religion decayed into the basest of forms, and eventually we saw the mistakes and problems with this.

All religions, if and when they exist, earliest or not, should point to God. Cain was the first to practice religion, and God rejected it. His religion was not based upon what God wanted, God wanted something that pointed to, and honored Him. Abel did that and Cain killed Abel for it out of jealousy and this became the earliest form of religion.

I was wondering what false god you worshiped. Now I know ! But you are totally wrong about this. The Bible , or the word of the true God says "In the beginning". There could not be anything before this.So try and start telling the truth if your asking a question on this site or at least go to the right source..

First you have to assume that the judeo-christian god and the story of adam and eve are true. There is also the possablity of mis-translations, but it is probably just because it didn't happen. Also the story of adam and eve took place 6,000 years ago, people have been around a lot longer than that.

Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them [Gen. 3:21].
In order to have the skins of animals, the animals have to be slain. I believe that this is the origin of sacrifice and that God made it clear to man. God rejected their fig leaves but made them clothing of skins, and when Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden, they looked back upon a bloody sacrifice. When they looked back, they saw exactly what God had Moses put on the mercy seat in the Holy of Holies: two cherubim looking down upon the blood that was there—and that was the way to God.
There are four great lessons that we see from the fig leaves and the fact that God clothed them with skins. (1) Man must have adequate covering to approach God. You cannot come to God on the basis of your good works. You must come just as you are—a sinner. (2) Fig leaves are unacceptable; they are homemade. God does not take a homemade garment. (3) God must provide the covering. (4) The covering is obtained only through the death of the Lord Jesus.
Man must have a substitute between himself and God’s wrath. That is important even in these days for man to consider. The hardest thing in the world is for man to take his rightful position before God.
Salvation comes when you and I take our proper place as sinners before God.

Science is flawed and does not know everything. It could be they just haven't found it or maybe there just wasn't that much that survived among many others far to numerous to list. Science is limited to what we know at the time for example at one time the greatest minds in the world thought the Earth was flat and you could sail off the end of it. Also at another time the greatest minds in the world believed it to be the center of the universe, see my point?

Hope that helps.

May the Lord our God grant you the wisdom and understanding you seek
