Play it by ear & ask him for feedback. Sounds like you're doing it to please/satisfy him, so you'll just have to experiment with feedback from him. There is no set time, whatever he gets the most satisfaction from is the correct time. I'll bet he won't mind a bit if you need to practice a few times, or a few hundred times, to get it just right!
