Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

I have two - Adaware for the tracking cookies and Avensis for the antivirus - both are free for home computers.
I had real problems with Norton - an incident with two women and a donkey spring to mind - and changed to these on advice from a friend two years ago
I haven't had a problem since - they are easy to download, easy to use and, apparently, the hackers have a competition to see who can bring Norton down.
Hope this helps

AVG free edition, people had been telling me about it for ages so I set up a test rig and bombarded it with all kinds of crap, it performed better than Norton and used about 40% less resource on the pc.
Norton got the boot and now all my machines use AVG.

AVG free edition
Spybot
Both cost nothing and used properly will protect your PC.
If you are running Windows XP, creat one Admin account and limit other user accounts. This will help stop anything being installed on your PC without your knowledge.

Use Mc Afee, its not free but works really well.
Usally on offer in PC world or if not buy from www.novatech.com
It works really well and does not slow up the computer like Norton does, it also updates it self.
