yea it is an American thing. the Daytona 500 is considered the Super Bowl of stock car racing, which is a bit odd since it is the start of the NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) season which is 36 races over a period starting at around Feb 18th to Nov. 20th, that general area give or take a week. in ways it is somewhat the same thing, however, it appears that what you are talking about is sport car racing. NASCAR is stock car racing, which really the cars are NOT stock anymore. the cars they use today all all custom made, but these cars are certain makes of vehicles currently on the market (Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge and starting this year Toyota) the model of the car must be a model currently availible to the public. but these cars aint your average street car. NASCAR was started as an actual organization back is 1947. but the true roots to NASCAR and stock car racing in itself is moonshine. the moonshiners would run from the cops on country back roads. it eventually became a competition between moonshiners as to who could make the fastest car. when it became an organization, they raced on oval dirt tracks in slightly modified cars right off the dealer lot, and in some cases rental cars were used. today all tracks are paved oval tracks with the exception of two which in fact are paved road courses, but im just taking about the main series of NASCAR (Nextel Cup Series), as there are 2 other series (Craftsmen Truck Series, Busch Series) the Daytona 500 though, started out as a part beach, part road track. a part of the track was ran on the beaches in Daytona, Florida and then back onto the main streets of the town itself.

Yes, it's an American thing and based on what I read about the Bathurst 1000, they are similar. However, the Daytona 500 is the season opener for the NASCAR season unlike the Bathurst 1000, which doesn't take place until October.

There is something underlined that is very special about the Daytona 500. If you are a race fan that has watched for many years you know what I mean. There is electricity in the air the whole week and through the Daytona 500 itself.

Most likely. The Daytona 500 is the first real race by the governing body of NASCAR. But you may also consider the Indy 500 which is from the IRL. It depends which style you like more.

NASCAR started by prohibition which happened a long time ago. So I guess its like an American tradition. But it sucks living in Daytona/Ormond during the races, I can't go anywhere without being in traffic.

Well, it used to be an american thing until Brian France was lured by Toyota to give up the ghost and let this great american race become a BIG JOKE. It's a sad day when we are looking out over the track and see cars out there that, NO MATTER WHAT THEY TELL YOU, are not american stock cars.

IT'S LIKE STARTING OFF THE FOOTBALL SEASON WITH THE SUPERBOWL, OR BASEBALL WITH THE WORLD SERIES...the biggest and best of the year to start it off, then the race to the chase and the chase to the champiionship at the end of 36 races. NASCAR is rapidly replacing the other major sports and the biggest all american spectator sport in the nation.
