Cat food is not really suitable for dogs purely because their nutritional needs differ. Puppies can be fussy about their food and will try their luck. Try only putting the kibble down once a day at the same time every day, if the puppy is hungry he will eat. when he starts to eat the kibble then you can start leaving it down for longer periods. The reason your puppy probably likes the cat kibble is because it is so small and easy to eat. Try getting the smallest dog kibble you can or crushing the bigger dog kibble smaller. Or soften it with a bit of water to make it easier to eat.

This pup should be eating soaked puppy food. Cat food has different nutrients than dog food.
You should change the way you feed the pup, only feed him two or three times a day. Read the bag and put out the food recommended, put warm water on the food and let it soften.
Let the pup have the food for about 15 minutes, then pick it up. It is not right to leave food around like that all the time. Dogs will get picky, obese or both. A healthy dog is hungry and happy to have food any time, but it doesn't mean it should eat itself to an early death.

If you follow the ideas I have given you here, the pup will grow into a healthy dog that will be happy to learn its training with treats.

If you can afford it, try Wysong. It is the best food available for dogs.

ok first of all dont feed or let your dog eat cat food it dose not have the nutrients in it for the puppy also you might want to moisten the puppy kibble in a little warm water so that it is soft and moist since he is so young hes teething and the hard kibble hurts his new teeth also you can try the canned dog food and mix it in there with the dry and start off with like a whole can with just a little kibble then slowly wean him off each day with a little less and less. also it is not a great idea to keep switching food liek that either due to the digestion. a suggestion of dog food would be either nurto max puppy or hills scince dite puppy both are good choices for puppy food. also dont just leave out food for him this can cuase overweight in the puppy and also puppys will eat and eat. give him about a 1/4 at am and if he dosent eat that then take it up in 20 mins and try again in an hour. and just keep doing this he will eat it when hunger has gotten the best of him also dont give him any treats or anything else other the kibble during the day.

Cat kibble can add alot of weight to a dog and doesn't always meet the specific requirements for dogs.
Weight can a real problemfor larger breeds in particular as it hastens hip/joint problems and shortens their active life.
As I see it ..
The only problem your dog is having with dry kibble is that it's out all the time.
It's boring. Same old thing day after day as often as he wants it.
He isn't hungry enough to eat so he manipulates you into giving him wet food or letting him eating kitty kibble.. which is usually alot tastier and smells better.

Try feeding him twice a day only .
Check his weight/ give him the appropriate serving or a bit less if he/she isn't excercised as often as the breed requires.
Give him 30 minutes to eat ... if he shows no interest .. pick up his bowl and let him wait for the next feeding.
He'll get the message awithin a few days and look forward to meals just as you do.

Another thing you might consider ... Is he getting enough excercise to work up an appetite ?
The food you leave out will go stale.. many animals will not eat stale food (unless they are starving).
Try a different dog kibble . Animals have taste buds too and have likes/dislikes just as people do.
I get sample packs or small bags of kibble when feeding a new dog .. it keeps the cost down.

If all else fails mix a teaspoon or so of wet food in with the Dog kibble.. mix it well or he/she will pick out only the meat ..
This usually cures the fussy eater .
that usually always provides interest .

Hope this helps.Gorilla Criiter Sitters

Try again with another type of food. You do not need to give him cat food, although it's not harmful, why not find a dog food he likes. Canned dog food is GOOD for dogs, it has more meat in it, and meat is what dogs eat!!! Mix it together with his wet food. I'm guessing you have only tried grocery store brands. Go to a specialty pet store, like PetCo, PetSupplies Plus, PetSmart, or any local natural pet food store, or even dog food from a natural grocery store like Whole Foods. I feed my dog a food from there called Country Pet, it is in the frozen section, it's great food. And always, READ INGREDIENTS, meat should be the first ingredient, not corn, and no preservatives or bad stuff. Don't use cheap dog foods like: Alpo, Purina, Gravy Train, Kibbles and Bits, Pedegree, generic brands, Iams, those are all CRAP dog foods and you wouldn't want to know what's in them. You can also supplement your dog food with fresh food- meat and fish. It can be raw, or cooked without seasoning. I always do this, I actually feed my dog raw, it is the best! And dogs like variety just like people do.

Cat food is not good for dogs. It will give some dogs diarrhea and it does not have the proper nutrition needed. Puppies can dehydrate quickly so you do not want to get diarrhea going. Maybe you can try mixing some canned puppy food with dry puppy food. I've had pets all of my life and this is how I feed my dogs from puppy to adult.

Cat food is not healthy for dogs to eat, they need different nutrients than cats do. In a natural environment, cats are true carnivores, they eat only meat, where dogs will eat a variet of foods. Your pup will eventually learn to eat his food when he gets hungry enough, pick one brand, and unless it causes allergic reactions or other problems, stick with the one type. Switching dog foods often leads to diarrhea, etc....it's ok to use cat food one piece at a time for a treat when training, but don't feed him cat food.

Hi sarah f!!
Most likely, Dogs themselves tend to prefer the cat kibble, they are more aromatic, fresh meat is the first ingredientand for in each Nature's cat kibble diets.

But, I'd like to offer for your dog 3 free dog biscuits recipes you can make at home. please look article: http://www.askedweb.com/askedweb/Biscuits/ - recipes by: Jeremiah O'Connell.

FIRST OF ALL, YOU SHOULD NOT KEEP HIS DOG FOOD OUT FOR HIM AT ALL TIMES. HE IS A PUPPY AND NEEDS DOG FOOD MADE FOR PUPPIES, NOT ADULT DOGS NOR CATS. WHEN YOU LEAVE THE FOOD OUT ALL DAY FOR HIM, IT GETS STALE AND REMEMBER, HE WILL NOT "STARVE" HIMSELF TO DEATH. EVENTUALLY, HIS NATURAL INSTINCT WILL "KICK" IN AND HE WILL EAT HIS FOOD, BUT GET A PREMIUM BRAND PUPPY FORMULA FOR HIM. WHILE CAT FOOD MAY BE TASTY TO YOUR PUPPY, AND IT WILL FILL HIM UP- IT DOES NOT HAVE THE SAME NUTRIENTS THAT A DOG/PUPPY NEEDS.
