My ex neighbors had many dogs and one would never let the owners pet it, nor come to them. Since I love dogs so much I fed it sometimes and when they moved I told them I would take care of him. I tried everything to get him to come to me but he would'nt. He's never been vicious and wags his tail. He will come within a certain distance to me but not all the way. Oneday new neighbors moved next door and my dog dug up their flowers. They called animal control and warned me to contain him or face a fine. I explained the situation and they let me use a dog trap. For 4 days he never went in the trap. Animal control came back and retrieved the trap. Two of them encouraged me to shoot him. I was shocked and asked if they could tranquilize my dog and was told no. Later I tried many times but they never have traps available to lend. I tried some pills the vet gave me that only slowed him down but I still couldn't grab him. I need him contained asap and don't know what to do. Any suggestions?

I don't know what the weather is in your area. Here, one can spend most days outside..When i was taming a stray (rescues) I would sit in a chair and read, with a can of tuna open on a low table next to me..If you are on the ground or at least sitting down, the dog is more likely to be trusting. One dog took two days of me sitting outside and reading a book (with bacon and tuna on the stool) before I could catch her to get a collar on her...You can sing or hum a tune, but don't look at the dog..just allow it to come up and eat the treat on the table, then put more out..You should be able to catch her the second time..

One of those unapproachable rescues is laying at my feet right now..She is the most loyal dog ever..

Why doesn't animal control in your area catch the dog and then you go to them and ask if you can adopt it? There's an obvious reason that the dog does not trust humans. Do be especially careful if the ASPCA catches the dog. Let them train it before you adopt, especially if you have children or other pets. We adopted a female shepherd from a similar situation years ago. It took months to catch the dog. In the end, we regretted introducing the dog to our group of 5 dogs because even though it only weighed about 30 pounds, it attacked one of our dogs that weighed about 55 pounds and the dog had to have about 25 stitches. We had to euthanize the shepherd. She wagged her tail and seemed friendly too just like the one you are speaking of. It was traumatic to euthanize the dog and to care for our injured dog who had not provoked the attack.

JEEPERS! DONT LISTEN TO DOUBLE ONE!!! he sounds like a very smart dog...for a dog. he is to smart to be trapped. will your neighbors work with you on this? will they help you to put up a strong but temporary fence? make a small yard within the yard...coax the dog into the yard by daily putting his food in there. never shut him in. do this for a week. let him go in and out freely for one week. be careful though, a scared dog if cornered could attack. after the week, if you can see if he will follow you in as you take his food in, if not, just watch from a distance when u put the food in there, and have the gate so that it shuts from the inside out...have a thin rope tied to the gate. when he is completely in...quickly pull the gate shut. after that, do your best to enter the area without alarming him or letting him rush past you...if he looks like he will do either...walk away and let him calm down. come back later with a piece of meat or something and see if he will take it from you...if not throw it in a corner away from the gate so you can enter...then enter and maybe you can get the rope around him. talk to him alot to calm him.

firstly dont make eye contact with the dog try to get down to his level even lower would be better, it will make him feel safer, and less threatend, talk to him nicley, coax him fith food. put the food start with 3-5 meters between you and gradually shorten the distance, only spend ten mins at a time tryn this, leave it for half an hour try again . roast chicken always seems to work, if no luck get someone else out there trying someonme opposite sex, he may not like males may not like feamales. best thin keep head down to side dont look directly at him to long., just sit there food beside or behind you not in front.

good luck wish i could help out more,

when you set the traps fix them in a way to where you can close the door. also you might conside makeing a fence trap like they do for horse and stuff. also you might you the kind of trap that they use on lions. I hope that you can get this animal, you sound like a kind and caring person.

This dog never comes in your house? Why don't you get a dog house for it, put some food in it and then block the exit while the dog eats. Secondly, maybe you should consider putting the dog down, it doesn't seen like it is having a very good life,

HOW ABOUT TRYING A BIG FAT JUICY STEAK? (COOKED, OF COURSE) IT WOULD BE MORE HELPFUL TO KNOW WHAT KIND OF DOG YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. FOR EXAMPLE, I HAVE A DOG THAT IS MIXED WITH AUSSIE AND HE IS VERY SHY, ESP AROUND STRANGERS-WON'T COME TO ANYONE BUT ME--THAT IS JUST THE WAY THEY (AUSSIE'S-ARE) . WHITHOUT KNOWING WHY THE DOG IS LIKE THAT, IT IS HARD TO GIVE ACCURATE ADVISE.
