I take it you mean Mardi Gras. It means "Fat Tuesday" in French and is the day before Ash Wednesday.

.Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, during which Catholics traditionally fast in preparation for Holy week, Good Friday and Easter.

Thus the day before Lent is the last opportunity to party and eat well prior to forty days of fasting and religious observance.

In New Orleans this has become a party in the streets with parades and floats and an emphasis on drunken reveling by college students or people pretending to be college students.

mardi gras, is a party that celebrates the last day before the onset of lent, so for some reason, catholics thought you should enter a time of prayer and light fasting by going out with a bang on a week of depraved parties, nudity and total drunkeness. dont ya love religion?
