Im a guy and i shaved my legs. No im not gay, i just didnt like the way my legs looked, my legs unlike the rest of my body was very hairy-the hair was dark abundant and curly. With spring sports and shorts season starting i thought i would shave them and let the hair grow out a bit but not as much as before. Im 16 and this was my first time doing this. A few weeks later, I like the way they look-hair wise. They have a little hair so the legs dont look girlish and not too gorilla like. However, many red bumps have appeared on my quads area..some look like little cuts and some look like acne bumps..these never showed up before i shaved.

I have two questions: Guys/girls-do you think what i did was a good idea? Guys/girls-How long do these bumps last, how can i get rid of them and how do i prevent them from happening next time? Girls-What do you girls prefer when it comes to hair on the legs?

Wow thats alot of questions i will answer each the best i can tho with me being a girl and all lol.
1.)do you think what i did was a good idea?
Um ur a guy.. but i guess it was ok tho u say ur not gay.. ok then. im fine with that. so if it made you feel more comfprtable with your self and how you think of yourself then good i think it was a good idea.
2.)How long do these bumps last, how can i get rid of them and how do i prevent them from happening next time?
Well the "bumps" may have showed up cuz maybe it was razor burn.. (did u use shaving cream!?) shaving cream prevents razor burn and it helps the shaving process eazier. (u can use guy or girl shaving cream to shave your legs) it is prolly just a skin irritation (Im a girl i shave my legs & i get those "bumps" too) they will go away whenever your body heals or makes them go away your legs arent use to getting shaved and u never shaved your legs before so u prolly did get cut lol. but thats ok.
3.) What do you girls prefer when it comes to hair on the legs?
Now do u mean just hair on the legs (like on me or guys?) ok hair on my legs i think its gross if i dont shave. its not feminine i dont feel girly but if a guy has hair on his legs i just think "hmm he is a guy most guys have hair on their legs" lol. nothing is wrong with it lol.
4.) Ingrown hair is just like a hair that i guess is growing wrong.. i dont know exactly how to explain it.
I hope i help you some what. tho you're a guy and you shaved i dont think its really wrong... you just did it cuz it made you feel better... (not like a gorilla lol) now i dont know personally any other guy in High School that shaves... but you know lol. i think its fine. what'd your parents think? i know if my bro shaved his legs my dad an my mom would prolly be worried. lol.
Oh also lotion might help the "bumps" go away. (works for me)

First question - was it a good idea? If you're comfortable with it, and with the possible reaction of others toward your decision, then that's what matters.

Second question - How long do they last? What those bumps are is ingrown hairs (hairs that are growing from the roots but don't quite make it through the normal opening from the root to the skin); they will last until the hair breaks through the surface of the skin. Waxing your legs may prevent them, or at least delay them; also, waxing will kill a few roots each time, so you might want to consider it until you get the amount of hair down to a level you feel comfortable with.

As to what I prefer - I honestly don't care whether a man is "hairy" or not; it's the person that matters to me.

Try shaving your leg hair the way the hair grows, shave your legs down from the knee towards the ankle. Ingrown hairs are hairs that have not broken through the skin and they sometimes get infected and look like pimples. You should also scrub your legs, gently, with a wash cloth to help prevent the bumps. By the way, weight lifters shave all of their body hair to show off their muscle definition, swimmers shave their body hair to lessen the drag in the water, football players shave their legs because they sometimes have to wrap their ankles with tape and takiing the tape off is torture. So don't worry about shaving your legs, if you don't want to have the hairy leg look, then OK. Personally, I like guys with body hair, but that's me.

I think its a personal preference. Since your hair was really long and curly, and probably thick, you should have trimmed them up a little before you shaved, I know that sounds silly, but seriously, trim them up, then shave in the direction the hair grows. If there is still hair there, shave in the opposite direction, but always shave in the direction it grows first. There is a product called bikini zone for those red bumps, it's really for the bikini area, but I dont see why it wouldnt work on your legs as well, especially if its closer to your business. if you know what I mean..like your thigh area.

Oh boy. You have ingrown hairs. That happens when the tip of a hair gets cut to a sharp end, then turns back into the follicle as it grows. Normally they last a few days to a week.
As a girl I never thought twice about a dudes leg hair, but I don't think you should resort to shaving down to the skin. This may sound weird, but have you thought about dog grooming clippers? not to suggest you're a dog, it's just they wont cut down to the skin, you won't have ingrown hairs or razor burn.

hey what's up...sure it was a good idea...if it's gonna make u feel better then what the hell...u did it for u and no one else! as far as the bumps go it's probably a mix between razorburn and ingrown hairs...next time u shave trying using a mositurized soap while u shave...if u have facial hair and shave...try shaving ur legs like u do ur face...if not...the only other thing is trying shaving with the grain not against it...and i personally dont like when a guy shaves his legs but if that's what he wants to do then that's his choice...i wouldnt not date a guy cuz he shaves his legs...

guys who shave are sexy. but as for those red bumps... make sure you take a hot shower and are in the water for at least 5 minutes before shaving... use shaving cream and a new razor ( to be honest, womens razors are best since they have all the added moisturizers) afterward, put on a thick lotion.... before you wear jeans or go running make sure you put baby powder on your legs to avoid the skin becoming irritated. i have my husband do this and it works like a charm.... just because i married an italian doesnt mean i want to deal with all the hair

No.
the bumps could last awhile, i wouldn't shave your quad area anymore if you get razorburn. i had the exact problem, but i wax em but you said you still want hair so DOn't wax! i don't know how to prevent them just stop shaving quads.
but personally i like a good ol man with hair, you shouldn't be insecure about it some girls like it, and the ones that don't will get over it trust me

The bumps are caused by ingrown hairs. Try Skin Tend lotion. It will clear it up.
