This is one way how to go to Confession

+ Get yourself ready by making your examination of conscience.

You enter the confessional. You can choose to talk to the priest face to face or anonymously behind a screen.

+ After the priest greets you with the Sign of the Cross make the Sign of the Cross and say: “Bless me Father for I have sinned. It has been (say how long) since my last confession. These are my sins…”

+ Tell your sins simply and honestly to the priest. Don’t be embarrassed.

+ When you are done listing your sins please say: “…I am sorry for these sins and all the sins I can’t remember.”

+ Listen to the advice the priest gives you and accept the penance from him. Then make an Act of Contrition for your sins:

My God,
I am sorry for my sins with all my heart.
In choosing to do wrong
And failing to do good,
I have sinned against you
whom I should love above all things.
I firmly intend, with your help,
to do penance,
to sin no more,
and to avoid whatever leads me to sin.
Amen.

+ The priest will then conclude with the words: “Your sins are truly forgiven, Go in Peace”. You respond: “Thanks be to God.”

+ Perform your penance as soon as possible.

With love in Christ.

I was brought up Catholic, confessed my sins to a priest ...Since reading the bible on my own as an adult, I've learned thru scripture that we have a direct link to God since Jesus died on the cross. The curtain was torn!! We no longer need a priest or any other man to confess our sins to. We can go directly to God Himself and confess any sins, to fellowship, pray, etc. I do not understand why catholics continue to do this?? The Lord wants your heartfelt words when you confess your sins, not memorized words that is just babble without thinking and feeling. I'm not downing catholics as I believe they are christians who believe in salvation etc, but I don't agree with this unnecessary practice..

It is a beautiful thing to confess your sins. It is true that God knows what we have done before we even do it but He gave us a free will. So that is why Jesus instituted the Catholic Church, so that we can have all these little privileges like confession, baptism, marriage etc.

Take advantage of all the sacraments in your life if you can especially confession.

You start by saying, "Bless me father for I have sinned. It has been so many years since my last confession. These are my sins........................................"
He will advise you on what to do next. He will give you absolution and ask you to say an act of contrition which someone has written for you up above.

Good luck and may God bless you.

The bible says that you do not need to confess to a man, the catholic church made that one up, but it does say confess your sins to your Savior Jesus when you are alone in your prayer closet and he will forgive you and wash you clean, he does require you to read his word so you will know the truth. start in JOHN! Once you read the word for your self you will be able to discern when a preacher or clergy are not telling the truth! And what they teach takes the power out of Gods word!

For now you do not have to memorize anything. Just tell the priest the truth. He will help you make a good confession.
Peace and every blessing!

Your penance will probably include an Act of Contrition, so:

O my God, I am heartily sorry for
having offended you, and I detest
all my sins, because of Your just
punishments, but most of all because
they offend You, my God, who are
all-good and deserving of all my love.
I firmly resolve, with the help of
Your grace, to sin no more and to
avoid the near occasion of sin.

Yes. Speak to God directly from your heart - He is the only one who needs to hear. No human can stand in that place for you - you must get your "absolution" from God alone and directly.

sure. ask why they are trying to stand between you and God, through his Son, Jesus. The Bible tells us this is a sign of a false leader.

Not a thing.
Go into a private place and ask God to forgive you.
