Professional tattoo artists have likely practiced on themselves under the guidance of their mentors using safe equipment and quality inks. It is not that hard to do and they can clean up their own work accordingly once they have the proper exerience. Some do fabulous first time pieces on themselves because they have practiced a long time on pig skin, etc.

Homemade tattoos as described above are just junk and mostly perceived as a form of self-mutilation because rarely do they have any artistic qualities, whatsoever.

Generally they are performed under unsafe conditions as well.

I don't think so, not these days anyway. 30 years ago the demographic of folks who got tattoos was really different and I do remember there being a certain stigma to it...it was mostly the lower classes/lower income prison/military/biker thing. I remember when they started to get more popular with young people, it was more of a rebellion/tribal/being different thing. This is also about when the popularly of body piercing in modern society got going. Now I think the tattoo and piercing thing is in large part young people thinking they are rebelling or whatever, but it's really just following the current fashion or cultural norm for youth. For the record, I would never get a tattoo...it would be like deciding which shirt to wear for the rest of my life. I always think about how gross a tattoo or piercing would look as I age. I don't even have pierced ears... But hey, when this stuff goes out of fashion, I'm sure there will be some medical procedure to repair the self inflicted body mutilation...

My brother is a tattoo artist, and yes, he's tattoo'd himself tons of times. He does it like he would do anybody else. He prepares the drawing on tracing paper, prepares the ink, gun, sterilizes what he needs to and begins. He's given himself one across the whole smaller under part of his arm that says "FAITH" because his best friend's mom died last year of cancer. He was close to their family as well as his own, and the mother's name was Faith. He's given himself the "Insane Clown Posse (Sp?) character on the calf of his leg, and many many more! They're all pretty big and he does a very good job. The first one he did on himself however was a tad bit shaky because he was nervous. But anyways, it's just like giving a tattoo to anybody else. Good luck☺.

If you want to be like the other scratchers out there, just go on ebay and buy a crap kit and mess yourself up - it is pretty easy!

A needle, india ink, and the will to do it is all it takes. Talent not required, it seems.
