I am training to be an RVT, but I feel like people don't respect the nurses as much as they do the doctors. I wanted to know if anyone had any pros to being an RVT instead of a DVM.

And for those who mention the pay difference, please don't-- I asked for pros, not cons.

As an animal lover I must say I highly respect the RVT as much as the DVM. I am an MD and without the RN's we would not be what we are. In our business, animals or humans, it is a team effort. Follow your heart and good luck.

RVT is an easier job and more transactional. You go to school shorter time. Your working day will probably be shorter as RVT.

But I'd go for DVM anyway. You'll make much more money (even after paying for school), the job is more fun, you understand more of what you are doing.

And you'll get your respect, if that's the thing you're going for.

I am currently studying to be a veterinarian. I worked at a vet clinic with many of the techs and loved them all. For me the techs were way more personable than the vets, they did more of the hands on things, they also did the regular maintenance of patients. The vets are mainly diagnostic and do the main part of surgeries and relay info to the owner. The expense part is something you have to look at but once you get into vet school, a lot of it is subsidized by the governemnt and when you compare that with the income you will recieve after getting your doctorate, it's no debate that becoming a vet pays off in multiple ways. :) but its a lot of work.

A veterinarian is a doctor and the veterinary technician is the equivalent of a nurse, the two decent careers. yet bear in concepts, if this concerns to you, the veterinarian (surgeon) makes so lots additional money than the technician.

There's a huge pay difference. I love animals and wanted to be a vet, but I'm just not good with death. I thought about being a vet tech, but I found out the pay is AWFUL. I personally respect anyone working with animals. Follow your heart and do what you love. Who cares about what other people think!
