It varies slightly from state to state, but here is a general definition. In most states, an assault/battery is committed when one person 1) tries to or does physically strike another, or 2) acts in a threatening manner to put another in fear of immediate harm. Many states declare that a more serious or "aggravated" assault/battery occurs when one 1) tries to or does cause severe injury to another, or 2) causes injury through use of a deadly weapon. Historically, laws treated the threat of physical injury as "assault", and the completed act of physical contact or offensive touching as "battery," but many states no longer differentiate between the two. If you would like specific info for your state, post where you live. I will list the specific levels of battery in your area.
There are also Federal counts that can be added to an assault charge if one of the following occurs:
Assaulting, Resisting, Or Impeding Certain Officers Or Employee
Assault Of Foreign Officials, Official Guests, And Internationally Protected Persons
Assaults Within Maritime And Territorial Jurisdiction
Maiming Within Maritime And Territorial Jurisdiction
Influencing, Impeding, Or Retaliating Against A Federal Official By Threatening Or Injuring A Family Member
Female Genital Mutilation

I'm certainly not an expert on the subject, but I believe the levels range from Battery in the First degree to Battery in the fifth degree. There are definitely levels 1,2,and 3. 4 and 5 are normally less severe.
