If this is a single grey hair and not a large group in one spot, then it is simply marking the death of a hair follicle. As we age our hair follicles die and the color cell becomes transparent. While it can be accelerated by outside factors such as chemicals, climate, health, it is largely genetic and not wholly unheard of or uncommon for this to begin happening at a very early age such as adolesence. I worked with a young woman who was just 21 and her hair was salt and pepper, more grey than my mothers. Some people just have this occur early naturally.
But try not to worry about it....or you'll give yourself grey hair, kidding of course.

I had an eating disorder around that age, and my hair began to gray. Also, it can run in the family, so ask around about aunts and uncles to see if they had the same problem when they were young. Sometimes you grow out of it, other times it is just dyed. If you are still worried, take your child to a dermatologists. Good luck.

A friend of mine in high school had a big patch of grey hair. She said her doc told her it was a pigment loss ......kinda like what Michael Jackson says he has that his skin is so light colored now.
