These are separate issues. More and more people, both liberals and conservative are changing their views about the death penalty as they learn the facts about it. Here are some verifiable and sourced facts about the death penalty. As you can see, none of these have anything to do with pro life issues.
Re: Possibility of executing an innocent person
Over 120 people on death rows have been released with evidence of their innocence. Many had already served over 2 decades on death row. If we speed up the process we are bound to execute an innocent person. Once someone is executed the case is closed. If we execute an innocent person we are not likely to find that out and, also, the real criminal is still out there.
Re: DNA
DNA is available in no more than 10% of murder cases. It is not a miracle cure for sentencing innocent people to death. It’s human nature to make mistakes.
Re: Appeals
Our appeals system is designed to make sure that the trial was in accord with constitutional standards, not to second guess whether the defendant was actually innocent. It is very difficult to get evidence of innocence introduced before an appeals court.
Re: Deterrence
The death penalty isn’t a deterrent. Murder rates are actually higher in states with the death penalty than in states without it. Moreover, people who kill or commit other serious crimes do not think they will be caught (if they think at all.)
Re: cost
The death penalty costs far more than life in prison. The huge extra costs start to mount up even before the trial.
Re: Alternatives
48 states have life without parole on the books. It means what it says, is swift and sure and is rarely appealed. Being locked in a tiny cell for 23 hours a day, forever, is certainly no picnic.
Re: Who gets the death penalty
The death penalty isn’t reserved for the “worst of the worst,” but rather for defendants with the worst lawyers. When is the last time a wealthy person was sentenced to death, let alone executed??
Re: Victims families
The death penalty is very hard on victims’ families. They must relive their ordeal in the courts and the media. Life without parole is sure, swift and rarely appealed. Some victims families who support the death penalty in principal prefer life without parole because of how the death penalty affects families like theirs.
Opposing the death penalty doesn’t mean you condone brutal crimes or excuse people who commit them. According to a Gallup Poll, in 2006, 47% of all Americans prefer capital punishment while 48% prefer life without parole. Americans are learning the facts and making up their minds using common sense, not revenge.

I'm against the death penalty, especially given all the cases in the last few years in which new evidence has shown that death row cases are actually innocent. Once someone is dead, there is no way to go back and say, oh sorry we got the wrong guy, hope you don't mind too much.
As for abortion, I don't support that either. But I believe that every one has a right to choose the path their life will take, and that includes whether or not they feel capable of carrying and raising a child. I've noticed that pregnant women who use drugs and refuse to get prenatal care aren't called murderers when their children are still born; yet they are just as responsible for that child's death as someone who has an abortion. So what's the difference?

I am for the death penalty, even though , they would probably suffer more in prison for the rest of their life, the death penalty just finished their sentence quicker. I don't like abortion, im not "pro choice", I probably would care alot more if it was my kid being sucked out at planned parenthood ( I say that as a male). But I have accepted that its here to say, and it does bother me that some liberal feminists back in the 70's used some woman in Roe v. Wade to shove down everyone's throat. But it might be a neccessary evil to keep the population down as much as we can get it. I don't really believe that you are only for the choice for abortion, but not for abortion, the point is you condone abortion in the name of "choice". Dressing it up with nice words dosen't change anything. It does seem weird to be against the death penalty but for abortion or "choice" as you try to call it. I don't get your argument that the unborn baby dosen't count, so therefore it isn't killing anything. There is a reason that there hasn't been a pro abortion/anti death penalty president yet.

No one is "for abortion". We are for the choice of having an abortion.
I oppose the death penalty in MOST cases. I make an exception for treason, and for military tribunals. You have to have the death penalty as an option in those cases because of the number of people it effects.
I don't oppose the death penalty on moral grounds....I oppose it for practical reasons. It's too expensive. Some innocent people have been killed. It's used in a racially motivated way. I have no fundamental problem with killing bad people if it's in the interests of society.
I also am in favor of instituting a new crime, punishable by death, called economic treason. This would be used on people like Kenneth Lay. The effect their greed had on the entire economy is more akin to outright sedition then theft. I think economic crime on that scale should be punishable by death.

if there is undeniable evidence that the accused commited a violent crime (rape, murder, etc) such as video tape or several eyewitnesses i am in favor of the death penalty. i don't support abortion, but it's not my place to tell a person that if she can live with it she can't do it.

I am in favor of the death penalty in cases of crimes against humanity, crimes against the state, the murder of police officers, and criminals who pose a significant and ongoing threat to fellow inmates and jailors.
I am in favor of women having the option of early-term abortions, especially in the case of incest and rape.
