So I'm a singer-songwriter with about 30 songs I've written and i don't know where to go from here. I guess I should start playing locally but how do i go about doing that?

One place you could try is retirement homes. The elderly people really appriciate anything you do for them and don't care (or notice) if you mess up. Me and my pals play at these places all the time, and it's a great way to start out performing and help your community.

Here's a list of place to try out:

Retirement homes
Hospitals
Weddings
Church events
County Fairs
Downtown areas (sit your case out for money)
Talent Shows
Libraries
Starbucks (my favorite - they don't pay you but you do get a free drink!)

Good luck!

let's look at a few successful singers and how they get gigs:

Brittney Spears.....sings with barely any clothes on
Jessica Simpson....sings with barely any clothes on
Paris Hilton....doesn't really sing...neither does she have any clothes on.....

see the trend?

jk......

Maybe you should try recording a demo CD and send it to local clubs and restaurants

that's how my career got started!!!
