On the whole, yes, the current rate of exchange is One American dollar = 8 Chinese ones. However, I stayed in Beijing and found it immensely difficult to find products of good quality. Some things I bought started falling apart right away so it's like you get what you pay for. One thing that I found to be MORE expensive in China than in USA and of very poor quality was the Cloisonne. Tip::: Bargain hard and do not go shopping in tour groups where they take you to those government-sponsored souvenir shops for tourists, they charge way more than where the locals shop.. Also, if you know Chinese it is easier to get better prices when bargaining ... E.g, I was able to purchase a jade statue at a hotel gift store and talked the saleslady down from $750 (she figured I was a tourist and wouldn't know better) to $245.

Yes, most products and services are cheaper in China then they are in the West.
For example, from a deli in Australia a can of coke is about $2.50 australian dollars. When I travelled to China, a can of coke was about 50 cents australian, and when I travelled to London it was about $5 australian.
Different countries and cities have higher and lower costs of living. China is one of the cheap ones.

Most locally produced things are cheaper in China than they are in the west.

Of course, they are often relatively more expensive to Chinese workers who, by western standards, have very low incomes.

And, of course, some things are VERY expensive in China.

Freedom of speech, freedom of association, freedom of religion, the right to peaceably assemble for redress of grievances and the right to be secure in your person and property from unreasonable search and seizure can rarely be obtained no matter what the price.

It depends on wether your being paid western wages or chines wages.

Not every thing is cheap, if you go for the cheap stuff generally it will fall apart in weeks.

Western food stuffs are more expensive, cheese, butter dairy products in general.

If you live in the big cities it is on a par with the west, but if you go more rural it is cheaper.

However, the Chinese see you as a westerner so you lie and are rich, no matter how much you try to convince them you lie and are rich and so can afford to pay double what the Chinese do, this goes for everything, you name it plane tickets, train tickets and on and on

a lot of things are actually the same price like NIKE, foriegn cars (german US Japanese cars), diamonds retain thier price, gold is the same everyplace too. But, many things are cheaper often at the expense of quality. Food, housing, and services like massages, taxis and entertainment are cheap. Lots of inexpensive clothes, DVD's, some cheap chinese electronics that are getting better.
