Usually viruses are set up to do exactly that if your computer is not protected! they do not let you easily get rid of them.. That is why you usually have to run a start up disk to get rid of them if you don't already have your system properly protected.

Try restarting in Safe Mode With Networking (reboot and press F8. Select Safe Mode With Networking). This usually lets you connect to the Internet without the virus running. I'd recommend going to www.kaspersky.com. Click the "Free Virus Scan" link at the top of the page and follow the instructions. Kaspersky lets you run an online virus scan, but it doesn't get rid of the viruses found. You can save a report of the virus scan to your computer, and then use that report to manually locate and delete the infected files.
I recommend Kaspersky over other AV programs, because some AV programs won't run in Safe Mode.
