Wonderful question! : )
I find that one hard to do sometimes, because as humans we tend to be very impatient for things we think we want. When I'm in a situation where I need God's guidance (Which I guess is almsot all the time, if I'm smart) I just pray that He will help, and pray that He will take away any doubt that I may have.
Then I try my hardest to focus on the fact that God knows best. It's very important to trust that He will act in the best way possible for everyone, and at the exact right time. Humans can only see from one point of view, so often our methods and timing are not to the highest good.
This also means that I accept God's will might be very different from what I want. For example, if I was in a situation where I needed money, but couldn't find a job. Instead of praying that I will get a certain job or income from something, I'd pray that God will provide for me..However that may be. Letting go 'any' control I may have over the situation. God's will might be that the money will come in another way, and at the exact right time. Maybe the job I was trying for would have brought more bad than good.
I just try to have faith. ^_^ There will always be times when we wont understand something, but He understands all.
Blessings and Love,
Sarah

Read your Bible every day. Meditate on the way God handles things and on his purposes for the earth and man. He tells us all exactly how he will correct everything and make the earth the way he originally intended it to be. These things will encourage you. Meet with others on a regular basis who also love God and are trying to do his will. They will also help encourage you and you can encourage them as well. Soon, all wickedness will have ended and you can relax and enjoy the fruitages of your faith.

God ALWAYS answers your prayers, but sometimes the answer is "no". We don't always get what we ask for, which at the time we may be very upset and disappointed about but we have no idea what trouble or pain we've been spared. Only God knows what is best for us and He truly does want the best for us! When I pray, I do ask for what I would like to happen but I always end my prayers with "thy will be done". Think of God as a parent and we as small children. Little kids beg and plead for things all the time, things that seem like a great idea to the kids but aren't safe or smart in any way. If your six year old wanted to drive your car, would you let him just because he asked?? No, of course not! And God isn't about to care for you any less than a human parent cares for a child, He loves you in a way you can't possibly imagine. God wants us to pray and talk to him because He wants to have a living relationship with us, He wants to hear from us, be a part of our daily lives. Again, frame it as a parent/child relationship. If you were a parent and only heard from your kids when they wanted something from you, that would be pretty sad. It's nice to have them come to you, just to talk sometimes. Be sure to say thank you to God too for all of the wonderful things in your life. Take time to notice the beauty in nature that God has so generously placed before us. If some place like Disney World would advertise an "out of this world daily light show of huge dimensions and gorgeous lights" people would pay alot of money and stand in line all day for a good view. But God gives you that every single day for free, it's called a sunset! How many times do you stop to appreciate that? Think of all the beautifully colored fish in the sea and the birds of the air, they are so gorgeous and vibrant but why? Many of them will go unseen by humans that would appreciate that beauty and God could have just as easily made them gray and dull but instead He made them beautiful and so varied as a gift to any one person that may happen to set their gaze upon them. It's a gift from a loving God who is very much alive and very much wants to be a part of your life.
When you get impatient for answers to your prayers, I would like to remind you to say to yourself this little mantra "All things in Gods own way, in Gods own time". God lives in eternity, He isn't tied down to our ideas of time. Also when you said that sometimes you worry about something and pray on it but nothing seems to have happened good or bad, have you ever considered how many things God has guided you away from that you aren't even aware of? Let's say you're late for work and you can't find your keys, when you do, you get stuck behind some slo-poke driver, etc. VERY frustrating, and we've all been there. You are so caught up in the bad things that have happened to you but have you ever considered what might have happened instead? What if you keys would have been right where you needed them and you got out the door on time, didn't have a slow driver ahead, you were on the road on schedule, which made is so you just happened to be at an intersection where a careless driver runs a red light. You could have been badly injured and faced agonizing pain and recovery. God doesn't control our choices but He will help us by allowing things to happen to or for us. And also, He helps by protecting us in ways we never even notice. Be thankful, be faithful and continue to pray. God never walks away from us, He is always there, waiting to hear from you. Be still and know that He is God....and He's got it all under control.
Blessings and peace to you!
