I have a serious question and since I am fairly new here and unsure about it. I can understand those from forign countries writting with broken english, they will improve with pratice. I can even understand a mispelled word or two. What about those that have written and spoken english their entire lives. Why is their grammar and spelling so horrible? Is it sheer laziness or a real reflection on the education system? Some of the questions I cannot even understand enough to respond. Do they care so little about how they are preceived? Do they understand that they are not taken seriously. There is a spell check are they too lazy to take the 2 minutes to check their work. I don't understand this at all.

I do understand simple mistakes, I make them all the time. I do however try to look over my post before submiting it and sometimes I am in a hurry or had a few glasses of wine and miss them. But I was refering to those who don't seem to try at all

I hate that so many chose what my post is about and just call me a grammer queen. But the truth is every single one of us has opened a post and said" what the h*ll" and had to move on because it was that bad. As for those of you like me who for me most part are intelligent people who make common mistakes in your spelling and grammer, I was not in any way refering to you. I can read what you wrote. I make spelling and grammer mistake everyday. I was not judging you.

oops I even made a mistake in that post by not rereading it over because I was talking with my daugter as well. But you can understand what I was talking about and that is my whole point.

I have often wondered the same exact thing. The art of writing is long gone, and it's a real shame. I hope a few teachers answer your question and give their perspective. Glad to know there are others that think it's important.

This is a constant problem. Part of it is due to them "texting" each other constantly using short-hand English. Part of it is because they are allowed to get away with it at school. All of it is laziness and inconsideration towards those whom they are asking advice from. And some is because they "simply don't have the time to spend doing spell check", as they put it.
They seriously believe that if a person can't understand what they have written, then that person's advice doesn't matter. After all, if we don't understand what they have written, then we're not in tune with them as a person.
The person above doesn't belong in public education. This is a public website, so questions and answers should be posted in proper English, or as close to it as possible. The people writing them should know the language they are using before they decide to distort it, and they shouldn't be encouraged by public educators to do otherwise.

Actually, No offense but they are probably just plain stupid to spell there own language. I think its really weird too. But sometimes i really think its Sheer Laziness. Some people just dont like to say things correctly. But, if they dropped out of school, then i could understand why but thats the exact reason of why we should stay in school. You have a great concern and question that really should be answered. You have tons of answers which one should you pick as Best Answer? Hmm? Thats a question i need to know!! Lol. BYE!

First question - why do you care?
This isn't school - this is a website that people go to to ask questions, for many Yahoo Answers is a form of recreation, kind of like a real time video game.
This isn't a class, nobody's getting credit and you are NOT the instructor - so why does the spelling of others matter so much to you?
Second, a lot of people who post here are frequent users of text messaging and instant messaging. Due to the realities of trying to communicate complex messages by typing with one thumb on a small cell phone, those media have developed their own rules of grammar and spelling.
As serious students of language know, every language, and every dialect within a language, has it's own rules of grammar and spelling (and, within the context of that dialect, those rules are correct).
Look at it this way, according to the generally accepted rules of IM speak, those posts probably ARE gramatically correct!
Beyond that, nobody loves a critic!
I personally am really irritated by grammar queens who spend so much time worrying about petty spelling and grammar excentricities that they don't even bother to figure out what the person is trying to say!
If you have good reading comprehension skills, you should be able to interpret the meaning of the message. THAT should be your focus, rather than whining about "bad grammar and spelling"

I see your point but I don't think in most cases that they don't care about how they are perceived. There are many schools that fail their students, my secondary school being one of them. I've had to take myself to literacy classes as an adult and still struggle with grammar and punctuation, although I excel in other academic areas it always let's me down. I think it's a good thing that people of all abilities and talents can communicate on this site. I don't understand some of text message type abbreviations though.

But it sucks, so yeah sorry for anything miss spelled in here :)

both are true. I, for instance, try and use proper english but sometimes i just can't be bothered. By the way, you have some spelling mistakes as well. You can easily make mistakes like spelling because if you don't read over what you've written, that's why we do check-ups and drafts.

I agree, and you do have a valid concern. I believe that it's a reflection of the mentality of today's youth.
Even a spell-check is a poor substitute for basic skills.

Get over it. It's the internet! If you want intelligence, go to poetry reading, a play, a concert or a lecture on art history. You're not going to find a great degree of "smart" here. But notice how I correctly used "You're" ....

I agree with you. But I think it is mostly kids and/or undereducated people that are too lazy to spell stuff correctly.
