A tank is filled by three pipes with uniform flow. The first 2 pipes operting simultaneously fill the tank in the same time during which the tank is filled by the third pipe alone. The second pipe fills the tank 5 hrs faster than the first pipe and 4 hrs slower than the third pipe. Find the time taken by the first pipe alone to fill the tank.

An algebra problem. Let the tank capacity be C, and the flow rates be X, Y, Z; C/X is required. We know that C/X + C/Y = C/Z; C/Y + 5 = C/X ; C/Y - 4 = C/Z Since C appears in every relation, its size is irrelevant and can be assumed to be 1. This gives us three equations in three unknowns which can be solved by the usual methods.
