If religions keep splitting. Eventually it will be impossible to believe any thing. I think the only problem we have is that our literature and message are not wide spread. Atheists don't go around telling people in Africa they should not believe the Christian and Muslim missionaries. We don't have a message of hope and salvation only reality.

Do you agree that the more different religions we have(or splits in religions) the better for our position???

I see where you're going with this....but I don't know that our position is the best for everyone.

Religion does provide order. It does provide a network, or community, for many things in the 3rd world.

I think Marx was right about religion being a drug...but I think a lot of people need that drug. And the ones who want to quit often need spiritual methadone.

I probably sound like an elitist....but I just want to option of agnosticism and atheism....I don't really want to promote it.

Take a look at some of the Christians in here...would you trust them without an artifically imposed system of order and morality? I wouldn't.

No matter how many religious sects there are, it is always difficult to convince someone that their religious beliefs are wrong in some degree. To the contrary, I think the more Atheists propagate their beliefs, the less Theists will make of their differences. For instance if Christians were left alone to themselves, they would quickly start debating whether or not someone MUST be baptized, or if the Sabbath still applies, or if the Trinity is an absolutely fundamental doctrine, or if you can simply believe in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, but not necessarily that the three are one. However, the more Atheists question Christianity as a whole, the more Christians will set aside the little differences, like whether or not Adam and Eve had bellybuttons, and would instead come to an agreement on the core doctrines of salvation through Christ, etc.

This is historically founded, because in America there was a lot of division between Christians until the Enlightenment. When people started questioning Christianity as a whole, though, they put aside their small differences and became more united, stronger, and one mind.

I never thought of being an Atheist as having a "position." I also don't think it would impact US at all. There would just be more fighting & hostility between the religions. (As if there weren't enough of that already.) Some people here seem compelled to tell us Atheism is a religion. IT IS THE ANTITHESIS OF RELIGION. "Small but Fierce" says Athesism is a religion, & refers to some dictionary or something. The operative word is "devotion." Atheists are not devoted to ANYTHING. It is so easy to interpret something to fit one's preconceptions. We don't have a "message." It is the "salvation" way down at the end of the road that motivates suicide bombers, & people not to think for themselves. We are fine, thank you very much, & have a good day.

Edit: Well! I was so busy having fun, just got back & saw the "details" to the question. Just what I said. Atheist would be the opposite of religion~however, THANK YOU Invisible Pink Unicorn! I loved it! I wish I knew how to download it. You put everything in perspective. What a bunch of nonsense this Atheists & yada yada is. When I could really enjoy myself! I'm off~

Have you ever heard of "The best habit is to have no habit" and "The best religion is to have no religion" ? Therefore ATHEISM is a religion in itself.

What is Atheism?

FUNCTION: Noun
ETYMOLOGY: Middle French athéisme, from athée atheist, from Greek atheos godless, from a- + theos god

1) UNGODLINESS, WICKEDNESS
2) A disbelief in the existence of deity
3) The DOCTRINE that there is no deity.

You said: "Atheists don't go around telling people in Africa they should not believe the Christian and Muslim missionaries. We don't have a message of hope and salvation only reality.". Are you not contradicting yourself by posting your "Fellow Atheists...?" and the details? Isn't this telling and/or preaching, too? And by the way, do not let your ignorance expand your distorted opinion to all religions. Muslim never had and they do not have missionaries. When it comes to missionaries, Christians are the masters. so please set your understanding straight.

I don't know....it seems that religions spread by fundamentalism, but eventually reach a certain size, at which point they begin to splinter.
Some, obviously, have splintered more than others.
But religion is very tenacious.
Some form of Hinduism has been around for 5000 years or so. I think that says something about the need for religion in many people, regardless of what reality tells them.

Religion is obviously the biggest threat to world peace we have today.
Just look at the Middle East where jews, christians and mohammedans are knocking seven kinds of s h i t out of each other and endangering peace throughout the world.
I think governments should address this situation urgently and sponsor a program to reverse religious propaganda before it spreads to other areas like Africa.

Unity can be a dangerous thing. The less control over the masses the better. However I don't believe man will stop being a vicious animal once religion is gone.

Small but fierce has a point-if you make rules and feel you have a "message" and a "position", this becomes the same as religion.
However, she lumps all atheists into the same category and some of us are not fanatical or "illogical" about it-we just don't particularly think anything happens after you die-you are gone and that's it.

To each his own. Our position may or may not be more recognized in the future. But as relgions split, so grows the tension between them. If we could just all respect that people have beliefs and move towards improving humanity as a whole, then that would be worth something.

Yes, divide and conquer. Honestly, i'd leave it up to technological development. Eventually we'll find intelligent life on another planet, than most religions will lose followers and will have to do some serious reworking of scripture. It'd be great to see bibles that say "newest edition" on the cover.
