I am considering adopting a small dog from a shelter. He is a Den Terrier/Staffordshire Terrier mix. I have 2 staffies, but what is a den terrier? I've never heard of that one before.
He is about 26 lbs at 1 yr old, short hair, staffie face, strange jaw (his lower jaw comes out slightly more than his upper - not by much though), bat ears, lovable, short (maybe 20 inches tall). Any ideas what breed that is? Maybe Den is short for somthing? His mouth reminds me of a Boston Terrier, but his snout is not pushed in.

That's a new one on me! Sorry. Not a dog that's AKC registrable that's for sure.
Edit: I considered whether or not they meant a Dandie Dinmont. I would have to see a pic to know for sure. Either way a mutt can't be registered unless you go with a sub-standard KC.

In Germany the German Hunting Terrier is often kept as normal house dog. These dog owners - who mostly got their dogs out of a animal shelter - told me about problems in the beginning of the training, but also that they today have obedient, reliable and faithful house dogs. Some hunters don't possess only one GHT, they have two ore more. Very seldom they're only kept as working dogs, mostly they are integrated in the life of the family, without any problems. Well trained GHT are on specific hunts not to replace and therefore have a "full schedule" during the according seasons.

"Den Terrier" is short for Dandie Dinmont Terrier. This very spontaneous breed indeed is AKC registrable, and it's just a long dog with short legs, and a relatively large head. You should adopt the dog, I met the breed because one saved it's owners life by dialing 9-1-1! Good luck!

I don't think it's an actual breed. Have a look at the Kennel Club website.

It's ***NOT***!!!!

"Den terriers" are just a certain line of HUNT/WORKING JRT! Made in PA.by a guy who wanted SMALLER (under 10 lbs!) jrts to fit the chuck holes in HIS PARTICULAR AREA!

The thing you're concidering is NOT anywhere CLOSE to that!!
It's just a MUTT/MONGREL! W/a BAD BITE!!!
Shelter people are ABYSMALLY ignorant & LIE ALOT!
