There are many "signs" of depression. & many degrees. Most are the "lack" of what people who aren't depressed feel, & the ways that they behave. Disinterest in social activites, negative feelings about their lives, sense of uselessness, no energy, neglecting personal hygiene, hopelessness~sometimes also sleeps too little, or too much, cannot cope with taking care of responsibilities~sometimes even going to the mailbox is too great a task. I won't give you a diatribe, but the general attitude is DOWN. Most (not all) people feel "despressed" at times, but deep depression is very debilitating.
