Sounds like the bronchi are irritated. You might gargle comfortably hot salt water to ease the irritation, and those cough lozenges - Honey-Menthol in the yellow bag - are very effective for me. This is assuming you don't have a high fever---
If the cough is from a tickle in the throat that forces you to cough constantly, the only thing that helps me for that is something with dextromethorphan, such as Robitussin DM. They (Robitussin)also make lozenges (with DM) that you can let dissolve in the mouth, very effective.
