Id go for the Civic . First of all let me say I am a nissan fan but not a sentra fan. The civic ride is passably better than the Sentra. In a collision, both would probably not fare any better than the other. Therefore, choose the safety ratings as decision guides, how many bags, driver, passenger, side bags? Choose resale value. Choose number of good features such as airconditioning, CD radioand speaker quality, comfort of the safety belt. The Nissans though I like them a lot, have uncomfortable seat belts. The american cars have the best(for me), a close second for seatbelt comfort goes to the European cars.
Ask for the guarrantee- how many years service, parts and labor.
Ask also for roadside services if there are any.

Here is a comparative test results of 6 cars which included a 2007 sentra against a 2006 civic among other cars. The sentra was rated 6th but again, it was pitted against more expensive cars. The 2007 nissan looks picture pretty but one reader remarked that he did not like the overall feel of the materials used, that it now feels like a Dodge Neon.

Best value? The Sentra.... since there's huge discounts on them. You'll be hard pressed to find the Civic with auto/air/pwr at $11k like I have seen Sentras go for in local papers.

But when you factor in resale value and driving enjoyment, Civic is a pretty darn good value also.
