Is the suppository the only way to administer the med? How old is the child? I would not give one to a child older than 3 or so if they didn't want it, and didn't NEED it to be administered that particular way. With toddlers, you just do what you can to calm them down, or wait til they are sleeping if necessary. Obviously use Vaseline or other lubricant so it's more comfortable. But I think for an older child, a suppository could feel very much like a sexual violation. It would very much depend on the necessity of giving the suppository whether I would even try to push the issue. There is usually an oral form of most, if not all, medications; maybe it is time to ask the dr. about that if the child is resistant to suppositories.

Yes, just have the child lie on her side, and put the legs sort of in a running position. You can put the suppository in that way - it's more comfortable and less embarassing for the child. (Even toddlers don't want to put their behinds up in the air while you stick something in there.) If its a baby, then just put the baby on her back and lift the feet, just like changing a diaper and GENTLY put the suppository in.

Mom to 3 here. Take your time. Explain what you are doing and that it's to make them better. Even little ones understand a soothing tone. Use vaseline to get the area ready and just be understanding about it.

Yes, no child ever wants to have medicine that way. As long as you make sure to put vaseline around there first they will be fine.
