For a field trip, my grade is going to Washington DC for a couple of days. Any ideas on what we should do during our free time in the hotel? We are going to have a lot of it.

Hopefully your hotel is near something. Most class trips wind up at remote suburban hotels outside of the city because hotels in the city are pretty expensive. There is a cluster of hotels near the Pentagon and Crystal City that are close to Pentagon City Mall, which can provide some entertainment away from the hotel. Many tours stay in these hotels. If you can talk a chaperon into it, take the Metro train a few stops to Old Town Alexandria. It's very historic, especially the several blocks of King Street down close to the Potomac River...lots of shops, restaurants and fun people watching. This is all assuming of course you're staying in that area...have fun!

I am sure you guys will be visiting the major sites such as the White House, The Smithsonian, The Monument, The Capital, Lincoln memorial, Jefferson memorial, etc as part of your field trip but if you don't ,try any of them. Take a boat ride near the Jefferson memorial and if you are staying near the subway station try going to Georgetown in the evening. if you are into shows try kennedy center off of Foggy Bottom station.
