In the story of Noah's flood, god created the rainbow to represent a promise, right? But rainbows are nothing but refracted light... Is the bible suggesting that light never refracted before Noah's flood? Also, the bible says that it never rained before Noah's flood, which COULD explain there being no rainbows.. but then how did living things survive without rain?

Actually, I don't believe in the "zoo boat".. or anything in the bible for that matter.

I just wanted to ask this question in such a way that the christians would actually answer it and not get all defensive.

some people believe that the earth's environment was extremely different before the flood, and that the earth had been surrounded by clouds like venus.
this could explain the massive amounts of water needed to flood the entire earth. this could also explain the demise of dinosaurs, because if they did go on the arc, when they got off, the environment would have been totally different, and they could have died off.
that would explain why there hadn't been rainbows before.
and don't try to say that they are nothing but refracted light, have you ever thought that God could have made the laws of physics and really all of science.
without him, you wouldn't even know what refracted light was.

God has his way's....so it didn't rain until the flood...the living survived because that was the will of God..you also need to remember that it says in the Bible that God created all of us, and by doing that He has provided a way for us to survive...As for the rainbow..it's a symbol of God's covering...why does it have to be so complicated...a rainbow is a beautiful way for God to show us His light, it is a wonderful concept to think He does it through refracted light...

skeptical as you are I could try to explain it but I wonder would it do any good. Before the flood a mist coverd the ground each morning and that is how the plants got waterd etc. with the flood not only did rain come down from the sky but up from under the earth as well. As for the rainbow, the bible said it and there is this thing called faith that I have so I believe it

It says in the bible that before the flood it had never rained before. so how could you have a rainbow???????????? So to Noah who had never seen a rainbow till then thought it was amazing and ment a lot to him and go sent it for a promise

And those who think they know it all (Noah Ark is just a story) How do you know!!!!! Well what about evolution that is a dumb creation story and does not make much sense flood makes more sense

rainbows are physical performances of Nature
the rain puts water in the air .
then diminishes ,rain gone but still a lot of water in the air on the way down ,
the sun behind ir reflects through the water producing a prism with all the colors of a rainbow.

this is very simple and does not require Gods help

This is only a badly made website, but still has a few things you could read to know.
The bible does not document everything in history, only about 'God" and the prophets etcetera, and I never put much belief in the book at all, except to use as a bug swatter when i run out of Raid.

Rainbows also appear in mist, such as from waterfalls. God would have had to change the laws of light refraction post-flood.

But hey, once you suspend disbelief, it's all believable. I suppose.

remember they lived in the god of eden adam had no sin at first until after god created eve and sin was introduced to the world.but before they was perfect they had no sin everything they needed was in the garden of eden they didn,t even know they was naked until they ate the fruit and there eyes was open that they was naked. the rainbow served as a reminder to god not to destroy the world with water again.

The Word says that dew came up from the ground and watered the whole earth. Don't belittle God's power just because you can't understand it. Perhaps small "bows" could be seen in the dew that watered the earth - it doesn't specify. But never before had water fallen from the sky and never before had the "bow" been seen in the sky.

"Rainbows are nothing but refracted light". Every single atom, every molecule that exists, God created it.

He can do anything, sustain anything, just by the power of His word.
