It won't kill you!!! but I would suggest that if you don't know what you are doing that you leave it up to the pros!

The stuff they use in the salons to dye your hair are the same type of dye's they sell in the box in the store. Your grandmother has been using them for a long time I'm sure and she lived long enough to become a grandma, so I assume they are not harmful to a person's health. I also use them myself. Just if you dye your hair do it in a well ventilated space, cause the fumes can be alittle heavy, but unless your nose is in the bottle it won't harm you.

As someone else suggested, use a temporary color at first if your nervous. They last between 15-20 shampoos. Also, don't do any changes that are really drastic. Especially dyes that lighten your hair color, they usually contain peroxide and if you don't time it right, that can damage your hair badly. So stick to a color, usually with 3 shades of your natural color, and you'll be fine.
Maybe you an ask your grandma or a friend to help you apply it the first time :)

Good Luck, and have fun.

You're talking about the hair dye that you get in a grocery store or at Wal-mart right? lol who told you it can kill you? maybe if you ingest it will, but if you dye your hair using the dye, you'll be fine. Just pick a color you like, and go to town. I use hair dye from the store all the time and I'm 32 years old, been using it since I was 16. I'd suggest getting a shampoo and conditioner (or shampoo+conditioner in one bottle) that caters to dyed hair. There's some out there that go one step further, they cater to the color you dyed it, like red, blonde, brown, black...

I would suggest not using Garnier's (sp?) brand. I used their red dye and it ran for weeks. (any red dye expect a little bit to run for a few days, after that it should be set).

I've been coloring my hair for years, about 20 years now. For beginners I would recommend Clairol's Natural Instinct because they wash out in about 24 shampoos, then you can graduate to the permanent hair colors which last a few months.
