I found Sound Taxi to be very easy to use.

The trial version allows you only 30 seconds of converted.

The full version though is only $15.00 US which is fairly reasonable! (download version)

You can also opt to purchase a disk for another $12 US

Are you sure it's the software and not that you need more memory? There are tons of options available to you, when using XP. Which converter are you using currently? And when you say converter, what is the original format you are dealing with?

Try the free program called "Audacity". It's well done, and you can read about it and download it at the below link.
