I am filling out my U.S. citizenship form right now and there's a part about name changing. I was wondering what's the process of changing one's name when becoming a U.S. citizen? Do I just have to write the name I desire on the form or is there more to it? Thanks in advance

You have to consider the consequences of changing your name. Yes, you can fill out that form and name yourself anew but again are you sure you want to change your name?

Changing your name has rippling effects, like for example informing the social security, your bank, your credit card, and so on and so forth, to all businesses and organizations that has your previous name in their records. You even have to inform your country of origin.

All your documents will be renewed under the new name. If that doesn't sound tiresome and complex to you, then do it.

Good luck.

I believe that you are allowed to legally change your name when becoming a Us Citizen to Amercianize your name. Lots of people do it. my husband immigrated from Hungary in 1956 and they all got new names cuz the hungarian pronounciation is just so hard. and his name was Geza- wierd for a boy in America.
the only thing is... because he was a kid, they didn't actually change his name in writing on the paperwork so all his papers still say Geza and two years ago (since the new Homeland security) he went to get his driver's liscence renewed and they wanted him to use his real name Geza- he had been going by George all these years. even on his SSN.
we had to go to the SSN office and have it changed etc.
it was a mess!! now, he has two names - on checking he might be George, or on house mortgage but on ID and SSN he is Geza.
moral of the story is--- if you do change your name, make sure it is documented properly and put on all your legal documents!!
good luck with INS they are so slow and not very helpful!

know what? rather than get a whole lot of well-meaning but wrong answers , if i were you, i would go to the immigration & naturalization service (INS) and ask them. they are the people who have these answers. there's also the net. INS has a site on the web. also some to-be-citizens get attorneys for just such a thing. you might inquire with an INS attorney. gosh. they handle this stuff all the time - they should know, right? if not, i wouldn't hire him to walk my dog.

First and foremost, congratulations and welcome to this great nation. Take your Naturalization Certificate with you to the Social Security office to apply for a SSN#, and to your local DMV for your drivers license. DMV will be able to assist you with your voting questions.
