I recommend you to use Acronis True Image to do it. True Image is backup software that can make a special invisible partition on your drive to store a backup image on it. In case of your system falling True Image will restore your data. To learn more about True Image features follow this link: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/

If you already have an operating system running, you will need something like psrtition magic to create the new one. Its cheap and available in all the software stores. It works as advertised.

Now, to create the backup, you can do a few things: The BEST thing is to get norton ghost to create an image of your primary partition. Now, this means that your backup image needs to be the same size (or greater) than the original. This is best if you get a 2nd physical drive that is at least as large as your primary master.

To make a recovery type drive on your new partition or physical disk, you can use MS backup on the XP pro CD. Its easy. Just make sure you do a full backup including the system state. You can optionally include your data files.
