Spend some time each day praying or meditating. Listen to Christian radio or TV. Make worship a part of every day, keeping you mindful of God's presence. As you practice your faith actively, you will see the changes that take place, and the calm peaceful result.

PRAY!! Now with me saying this, you're probably thinking..when..how...and what if I don't have time...set aside some time, God is totally worth it. I don't always have the time to pray either, but I do pray before every meal and I pray when some asks me to pray for them...but set aside 1 hour a week to just take personal time with God and pray for anything that comes to mind, and maybe you could even read some passages from the Bible: The New Testament is more interesting than the Old one, but I like the books: Psalms, and Romans the best:) Give it a try. Remember: Good things come to those who pray. God Bless.

Prayer is talking to God which is great that you are talking to Him.
But do you know how to listen to God? And do you KNOW the God you pray to? The Bible reveals WHO God is and His purpose and plan for your life. He uses it to talk to you ... that's why it's called the "living WORD".

When you understand Who He is and Who you are, it's much easier to connect to Him. Read through the Gospels... Mathew, Mark, Luke, or John. Reading about Jesus will help you understand God. Jesus says in John 14:7 "If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!"

Spiritual Disciplines for A Christian Life by Donald Whitney is a great resource book if you want some practical habits to enrich your life as well as further understanding.

Some may feel that God does not answer their prayers even though they pray to him through Christ. However, the apostle John said: “No matter what it is that we ask according to [God’s] will, he hears us.” (1 John 5:14) So, we need to ask according to God’s will. Since he is interested in our spiritual welfare, anything affecting our spirituality is an appropriate subject for prayer. We must resist the temptation to concentrate entirely on physical needs.
Jesus Christ taught his disciples how to pray. In the model prayer recorded at Matthew 6:9-13, he set out a pattern of subjects about which we may rightly pray. God’s name and Kingdom must be the top priority. Asking for our material needs is appropriate. It is also important to ask for forgiveness of our sins and for deliverance from temptations and the Devil. Jesus did not want us to repeat this prayer over and over, reciting it without thinking about its meaning. But make our prayers meaningful, from the heart. And whatever we ask it must be asked in Jesus' name.

God may allow a situation to continue for a while, but he does answer prayers and knows the best time to do so. By persevering in prayer and acting in harmony with our petitions, we show our sincerity. As we continue to pray while trying to control our sinful urges, we will see how God helps us. This will build up our faith and strengthen our relationship with him In turn our lives will be happier.

Do you have a good bible teaching church that you go to? The bible says faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. I have been studying the bible, in a ladies' bible study, for about nine years now. Every year we take one book of the bible and we have lessons. I can honestly say that because of this bible study, my life has turned around over and over again. And my relationship with Jesus deepens and gets richer. Prayer is also very important. But remember, the bible is God's word and when we take it into ourselves, just like good food strengthens our bodies, His living word develops our faith in Him. Do this and you will have joy and peace over and above anything you could imagine.

Read your Bible and find a church that is in line with its teachings. Bad people corrupt good morals or however it goes, really is true. Its hard to be connected with God with sin always present.

Its not about perfection but progression.

God Bless

Your question was a first step, you just asked the wrong person. Ask Him. Tell Him your desire to draw closer. He says in His word, "Be still and know that I am God." Be still and let Him speak to you. Doing things does not bring Him closer, talking and LISTENING is the key.

Learn and practice the counsels of the One True God revealed in the Holy Books of His Divine Messengers which are now available on the Internet.
The reading and practicing are very very difficult, but He will bless you with divine guidance when you truly want to build good connection with Him.
For people who don't believe in God, it is almost impossible to quit drinking alcohol; but those who sincerely wish to please Him can overcome thanks to the divine will and knowledge. We don't pray blindly, but we make ourselves resolute with faith and wisdom.
