If you've already seen a doctor, your best bet is a couple of Tylenol, and plenty of rest.

If it is sore due to sinus drainage you can try this yukky but very effective treatment. Just put some warm salty water in a baby aspirator syringe and lean over the sink. Squeeze gently until the water goes in your nose just enough to rinse your sinuses. Blow out gently thru your nose the whole time. Do the other side. Then blow your nose on a very big towel. Instant, complete relief.
If your sore throat is due to dry air, breathe the steam rising from a coffee or tea cup. Or steam up your bathroom and sit there until you feel better. If your local ymca or gym has a steam room, get in there for about 15 minutes. That will help, especially if you rub some Vicks under your nose.

Take an aspirin and let it dissolve in your throat. Have water handy because this can make you gag. Suck on vitamin c drops. Get alka seltzer for sore throats. Gargle with warm salt water every few hours.
Call the doctor again.

You can get those anesthetic lozenges from an all night store, but then be careful not to eat hot foods or you will burn your tongue and not know it till later.

In general, sucking on hard candy is one of the best things you can do for a sore throat. They have sugerless types too.

Gargle with warm salt water about every couple of hours.

Take at least 3000 mg of Vitamin C (best and cheapest: Spring Valley Brand at Wal-Mart...make sure it says "Timed Release"...get the 1000 mg tabs and take one in the morning one in afternoon and one at night.

Increase citric juices, especially grapefruit juice.

Put a large pot of water on your stove, and when it comes to a boil, turn the heat down to low and let it steam the air in your house. You might need a vaporizer for your bedroom, since a lot of these conditions get worse before you sleep.

IF you also have a nagging cough, then post-nasal drip may be aggravating this condition.

Plain Sudafed (get generic pseudoephedrine) will help this, as will plain aspirin, which has anti-inflammatory properties that Tylenol (acetominophen) doesn't.

Always call your doctor before trying out my advice.

Home treatment is usually all that is needed for a sore throat caused by a virus. If you are taking antibiotics for strep throat, these tips will also help you feel better.

Gargle with warm salt water to help reduce swelling and relieve discomfort:
Gargle at least once each hour with 1 tsp( ) (5 g( )) of salt dissolved in 8 fl oz(237 mL) of warm water.
If you have postnasal drip, gargle often to prevent more throat irritation.
Prevent dehydration. Fluids may help thin secretions and soothe an irritated throat. Hot fluids, such as tea or soup, may help decrease throat irritation.
Use a vaporizer or cool air humidifier in your bedroom.
Warm or cool mist may help you feel more comfortable by soothing the swollen air passages. It may also relieve hoarseness. However, don't let your room become uncomfortably cold or very damp.
Use a shallow pan of water to provide moisture in the air through evaporation if you don't have a humidifier. Place the pan in a safe location where no one will trip on it or fall into it.
Stop smoking and avoid secondhand smoke. For more information, see the topic Quitting Tobacco Use.
If you suspect that problems with stomach acid may be causing your sore throat, see the topic Heartburn.

Well if you have already seen a doctor and they didn't say anything warm salt water helps. Chloreseptic also helps reduce the pain...hope its nothing too bad I have had mono, and strep before so the hurting to swallow and everything else is a familiar feeling.

Sore throat is usually due to a viral infection. Gargling with warm salty water or mouthwash can reduce the pain and inconvenience. You can find some good home remedies at http://ailments.in/sorethroat.html

A local anesthetic like the one in Chloraseptic spray temporarily numbs the pain for a quick relief. Lozenges are also available.
