Hi there...many cats make this noise when they become very excited and it is very common among nearly all cats.
Here's a video of cat making this noise: http://youtube.com/watch?v=JLwEktLK3Yk

it's just your cat...I am not sure but is your cat's attenion fixed on anything when it makes these noises? It maybe doing what is reffered to as chattering which a cat often does when it is hunting...this can be rather freaky sounding to a human...and each cat's chatter is different an unique! Rejoice! you have a cool sounding cat! Mine sounds like a dying bird in a rain storm! HA HA HA

Haha. I read somewhere recently that cats are capable of producing over a few hundred diferent sounds. (They just don't always make all the different sounds.)
So with that bit of knowledge, I'm going to assume that your cats dolphin-like noises are fairly normal, unless it sounds like your cat is in some kind of pain, then of course you might want to go to the vet to get that checked out.

Ditto to everyone who answered above; it's usually a huge hunting reaction.
Plus, I was scolded once by one cat when I took the other to the vet alone. We came home, Cali ran and hid with daddy. Ms. Grey calmly walked into the kitchen, sat down and chattered at me for about five seconds straight and walked away.

I think most cats do this ... My cat did it when it was sneaking up on a fly or seen a bird or something outside that it was wanting to attack... i think its like a partial meow that went weird... remember cats and dogs have different ways of communicating!!

They all do that.
Usually when mine see a bird they make the throaty "Flipper" sounds.
They are capable of over 70 different kinds of vocalizations.
Check out the U-tube movie of Nora the piano-playing cat.
There's a trick I want to teach mine.

Both mine make freaky noises. If one of them jumps on the bed in the middle of the night the only way to tell who it is is to scratch on top of their tail. One says "mrp" the other says "brrr." Go figure!

trust me its not just your cat. My cat started doing it not long ago. It means they either have a hairball or they are about to throw up. I know this from experience.
