If you want a bad viewpoint on your situation:
I think that he is still emotionally attached to you (even by threads) and may have difficulty in letting go...
As to your son, I think that he is having trouble accepting the fact that you two had actually conceived children together and may be living in a dillusion of your romantic days where there was only the two of you.
If you want a good viewpoint on your situation:
He's still emotionally attached (even by threads) and may be trying to "get back" together with you and your son. He might even be considering / wishing to be a respectable and responsible father figure for your son once you invite him back into your life.

He should have sent your son something as well. It really must have hurt that child knowing that his father didn't even consider doing something special. If you are truly friends with each other than I see no problem with sending each other gifts but to also include your son in it.
