I've played with tempera and it can be fun to work with and you can come up with come cool art. However, remember that it is cheap, budget paint that will not hold up well over a long period of time. And because it is liquid paint it's very difficult to get any type of texture. If applies too thick it will crack and may start to flake off (this is coming my own personal experiences with it) after it dries.

This may not happen if you're using a hard board but on a canvas it probably will crack.

By the way, I really like your painting.

I think it's safe to say you would have a very difficult time doing that with tempera. You would need to have plenty of Tums on hand. Tempera is brittle stuff - not designed for texture.

That looks like it might have been done in oil. But - if I were you - I'd try the acrylic route, using a combination of applying your colors very thin and blended while also building up parts of your surface with gel additives. I've had a lot of luck with the stuff that Golden Acrylics makes. Liquitex makes similar additives for acrylic.

Tempera is a very dry paint usually used thin. I would imagine that if you were to try to make the actual texture of the paint as thick as the example shown with tempera, it would crack and fall off the canvas.

Acrylic would be the best bet if you don't want to use oil paints...they give you flexibility and the ability to go thick and they clean up with water.

Good luck.

Possibly if you mixed it up with flour paste but it will still be brittle and flaky.
