What's wrong with over the phone? If she gave you her number, you're halfway there. Just call her up, and say something like "Hey, do you want to meet up at Starbucks next thursday at 5pm? I'll buy you a hot chocolate.".
All she can say is no. If she likes you, she'll suggest some place else or some other time. Either way, then you know.

your friends may be trying to protect you from what tyou can't see but i dunno i was wrong about my friend and her BF so yea it might be the same for you...
I dunno how old you are but i think that phones are always akwarder than in person or msn... but thats just my opinion... and maybe you will regret not having the chance to ask her if you don't ask her now... but if she likes you then things shouldn't change in a week. Maybe you can ask her to go for a walk or if your at school you can walk with her home and if she makes up excusses or makes sure her friend comes allong them maybe this is an indication that she doesn't wana go out. Anyways i dun really know the situation so its a bit hard to say. Hope i helped :D
Ok and this is a message for all guys... if you do ask a girl out and she says no then don't ask again, that is a creepy stalker thing and it is not attractive at all. if she says no once she is not going to suddelnly change her mind... exept maybe in thinking you are a creep...

Call her and let her know how you feel. Then u can ask her out, or wait till the next time u see her. Don't care what other people think of you. Be your self
