My daughter complained with tender swollen breast for around 3 years before she ever started her period, so don't panic. You can use family history as a guide line, if women on either side of the family started early chances are she will too. My oldest daughter started around 13 same as me but my middle daughter didn't start until 14 1/2. I ask the doctor if I should worry and she said it has alot to do with mental state, weight, and if they are around other women who menstruate. My daughter was spoiled and thought she was still the baby, she only weighed 92lbs and I had a hysterectomy so I no longer menstruate all 3 caused her to start later. Every girl is different and change from from a girl to a young woman at different rates. Some may show the 1st sign and seem to change over night and others may take years . I hope I have helped.

9 Year Old Puberty

Physically, puberty is possible at that age. However, you MUST get his behavior under control. Mentally at that age, he doesn't understand what is appropriate or not. That won't be a good enough defense against the parents of any little girl who finds his behavior inappropriate. His body's changes are a REASON not an EXCUSE for his behavior. Make an appointment with a doctor to rule out any medical reasons for precocious puberty (overactive glands etc.). And have a frank talk about how he needs to behave around others, with CONSEQUENCES clearly spelled out for inappropriate behavior.

I would say nine is very early to start puberty. I actually have a friend who has a five year old niece. Her niece started puberty at 4 years old. She started getting body odor, pimples, hair on her body and other things. Her mom ended up taking her to the doctor and she had a large tumor that was causing this. She just had surgery a week a ago and is now doing great. The symptoms have now begun to go away. I hope this helps.

I (20) started puberty at 8 1/2. It is normal...
I had breast size 32C by fifth grade and 32DDD now
I had my first period when I was 11.
I am only 5ft 1in.
My doctor says this is all directly linked to an early puberty... although it does not happen all of the time.
My only memorable problem in school was the kids used to say I stuffed...
I hope this doesn't scare... I made it through ok she will too. just hang in there for her.

Good Luck

I read somewhere that fat little girls reach puberty faster because the fat increases levels of some hormones or something like that. They said the extra exposure to hormones could increase risk of breast cancer later on. Hmmm . . . it does seem that 9 years old is early to be starting puberty though. Maybe you should take her to a doctor to make sure she's OK. Good night!

It is possible that it is puberty, some children hit puberty very early in life. I remember a teacher telling me of a child at age 8 who appraoched her in tears thinking something very bad was happening to her, which it turned out to be the girl starting her period. Maybe take your daughter to a doctor and let them check her out, just to be certain it's not something else.

NO! I got my period when I was TEN. I'm 15 now. For some reason, girls are hitting puberty at earlier ages. All of them. My friends are all similar, one of my friends told me she got hers when she was 8! It's something to do with the fact that we are better nourished and exposed to different chemicals.

And, just for the record to the answer above mine, I'm not fat! Or even chubby for that matter. And I still got mine early.

Oh yeah and one more thing lol, the doctor said I'm perfectly healthy and its common nowadays. So I wouldn't worry too much!

More and more we are seeing young women developing earlier than in years past. This is just the beginning...it doesn't necessarily mean she will soon have her cycles. I took care of a girl who concieved at the age of 91/2 and she delivered at 10. She had never had a period but was impregnanted just as she ovulated.
