I am a former church of Christ member, but I became a Catholic three years ago. I will be observing the Lent season through the guidelines of my church. I will attend mass Wed. morning and and distribute communion before receiving ashes. I am a female Eucharistic minister at my church.
Although Ash Wednesday is not a Catholic holy day of obligation, it is an important part of the season of Lent. The first clear evidence of Ash Wednesday is around 960, and in the 12th century people began using palm branches ffrom the previous Palm Sunday for ashes.
There are many references in the OT about ashes and in the NT Jesus refers to the use of sackcloth and ashes as signs of repentance: "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes" (Mt 11:21, LK 10:13)
By the way, to all those who do not know this, Catholics are Christians, and they do follow scripture.

I just gave up on the whole ordeal....hmmmm maybe that will be my Lent 2007.....and start observing Lent again. All I have to do is just acknowledge it exsists...that's easy I can totally do that.

I am going to Ash Wed. services and then off to a few days at Gethsemani Abbey the Trappist monastery where Thomas Merton was a monk. I am really excited about see the place, as he is one of my favorite authors. For the rest of Lent I will also be fasting and exercising because I need to get in shape and Lent is the best time to force myself to have some discipline.

i imagine i am going to quick throughout the time of Lent--one meal an afternoon and 2 snacks. i intend to substantiate i'm getting sufficient energy to stay healthy and keep my power stages up, and that i imagine this may paintings. i am going to continually be a touch hungry, so i'd be continually reminded of Christ. i needed some thing that i will continuously conflict through for, regardless of if in trouble-free terms in a small way. i come upon if I supply up sweet or soda or some thing like that, i'm getting used to it after about a week, so after that that is not any longer a lot of an ordeal. i'm also going to enhance each and on a daily basis prayer, yet i'm no longer particular precisely how i am going to attempt this. I already bypass to each and on a daily basis Mass some days a week, and that i practice commonplace Confession, yet i imagine i want to spend more beneficial time with God, regardless of if no longer at the same time as in formal prayer. The very last area of Lent--to boot prayer and some type of fasting--helps people and "giving again." i'm no longer particular what form this may take for me yet. i imagine that is tremendous that you're searching at Lent. it might properly be tremendous on your non secular boom. in case you supply up meat, please make certain you're nonetheless getting protein and proper food. i am going to take a commonplace nutrition at the same time as fasting; perhaps you need to attempt this, too, in case you do not already.

Hi MNL,
I am a Christian and I see no reason to observe it. The First Century Church members did not do so and we do not either. It is NOT a Christian Holiday. The only observed religious day that is mentioned in the BIBLE is the Lord's Day and we are to observe the Lord's Supper and Give as we have been prospered. Have a great evening.

I was just thinking about this. I am going to attend Ash Wednesday services along with the fast and abstinence, then I will be doing the every Friday abstinence thing but I think I will have to do more visiting of the sick this Season. You are not really supposed to talk about what you are giving up because then it's like not as big of a sacrifice because people will know it. I will also try to read more about the Saints I think.

I am a Christian, and won't be observing Lent. The church (church of Christ) I am a member of doesn't observe it either, it only observes the Lord's day (Sunday, first day of the week). On Sunday, we meet at the church building to worship God (Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16) and break bread (Acts 20:7). Why observe Lent? It isn't in the Bible.
Ephesians 5:19
(KJ21, 21st Century King James Version)
19speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,
(ESV, English Standard Version)
19addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart,
Acts 20:7
(KJ21, 21st Century King James Version)
7And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow, and continued his speech until midnight.
(ESV, English Standard Version)
Eutychus Raised from the Dead
7On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and he prolonged his speech until midnight.
To Tiget L: Since you say you are a former church of Christ member, I cannot believe that you turned your back on Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour, and God, our Heavenly Father, and joined a FALSE church.
Galatians 5:4
(KJ21, 21st Century King James Version)
4Christ then becomes of no effect unto you, whosoever of you claim justification by the law; ye are fallen from grace.
(ESV, English Standard Version)
4You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified[a] by the law; you have fallen away from grace.

[a] Galatians 5:4 Or counted righteous

For me, I plan to give up sugar/sweets. But I also pledge to pray the Rosary daily.

I'm thinking of giving up Jesus for Lent. It's been working for years... in fact, I never really stopped. I guess I'll just maintain it!
