I have a 16 month old and his cib doesn't convert to a toddler bed. I just had a baby and she is 1 month old she is sleeping in a bassnett right now. I'm thinking about buying a toddler bed for him and giving her, his crib. should I just wait a while or is he old enough? (ps he's really short for his age, he's in 25 percentile)

(ps he's really short for his age, he's in 25 percentile) He jumps in bed already and attempts to clime out but like i said he's short so he hasn't made it yet. But hes a great climer. He climes anything he can chairs, or he has a 7foot stuffed snake (we won at carnival) that he even clims to the top. He loves climing... so what do you think?

He's not too young. My nephew was in one at 12 months because he was trying to lean over the rails. Just teach him how he can get out of the toddler bed on his own by laying on his belly and scooting down off the bed. Most toddler beds come with rails, but you can buy them separately if not. Not only do they keep him from rolling off, it gives him something to hold on to when he is getting on and off the bed. If you choose to wait, put him in a toddler bed as soon as he starts leaning over the rail, climbing, or trying to get out.

Not at all,
I think if YOU think he can do fine, then he can. If you do get him a little bed, do use the toddler rail (it's mesh and plastic, and clips on the bottom of the bed) so he doesn't fall out at night, and make sure it's less than a foot off the floor. It doesn't matter so much how tall he is, but you should remember that (I'm assuming he walks) he will be able to get out of bed and walk around. So, is he SAFE enough, should be the question, and only you can answer that. How far away will he be from you? Does he have his own room? Do you use a baby monitor at PM? are all plug outlets covered? will he trip at night? etc, etc, etc. I have my own 16 month old, and am getting ready to move her also. She still is in her crib, but she is my only one. If you do get a bed, be sure and let him be a huge part of it, picking it out, his choice of bedding, (superman blanket etc) so that he will be excited to be giving up his crib in exchange for the big boy bed. Make it a gift to baby so he understands he cant be taking 'his' bed back. ie have him make a card, have a big boy party... If it's fun for him, you will have a big little boy who will be stoked to be in his bed each night!
Good luck!!

He will probably be fine. If you are really worried, you can buy a crib that does convert into a toddler bed. That way you can wait until you are 100% sure he will be fine. Any you can use the crib as his bed until he is 5 or older, depending on what his weight and height will end up being.

My girl started to climb out of her crib at 18mo. I'd hear a thud and run in room to find her on floor. Thank goodness for thick carpet! I didn't get a toddler bed but in retrospect I should've. So if I were you I'd move my 16mo old to a toddler bed. It's low enough with a guard rail and I'm sure he'd appreciate being the big brother! Congrats on the baby and good luck with everything!

My daughter was in a toddler bed at 15 months and my son was in a twin bed at 18 months. He'll be fine. The toddler beds these days have little safety rails on them and they're barely 8 inches off the floor.

It depends. All toddlers are ready for toddler beds at different ages. If he knows how to climb out of his crib then i would give him a bed. If he doesn't know how to climb out of it and hasn't even tried to then keep him in his crib for awhile longer. My son is 17 months old and sleeps in his crib still i know if he were in a regular bed he would fall off of it easily. Plus he still moves around alot at night. Does your son move alot in his sleep? If he does you should wait to make the transition.

We moved our daughter to a regular twin bed with a side rail when she was 16 months. It worked great. But she was excited about having a big girl bed and being in a big girl room. (And we were expecting a second child, so we wanted her to be comfy in her own room before we started working on the idea of another baby sleeping in her crib!)
I HIGHLY recommend installing a baby gate across your son's door, if you don't already have one, and taking a cold, hard look at the state of "babyproofing" in his room.

All 3 of my children were in toddler beds by the time they were 1. It's low to the ground and perfectly safe. My youngest is on the shorter side too and she did wonderfully with the toddler bed. He'd love it especially with all the new toddler sheets and comforters they have. Let him help pick it out and be part of it..it'll be easier to get him to sleep in it.

He's old enough at the age of 1. Just tell him he's a big boy now and needs to sleep in a big boy bed.

Thats kind of up to you do you think he will get up throughout the night and wander around the house or will he stay put? You can keep the little one in the bassinett for another mo or 2 then move him into the toddler bed. Usually around 18mo-2yrs is when you move them to a toddler bed. Well good luck.
