Start with the most expensive rooms to do. That would be the kitchen and the bathroom. You'll spend the most cash redoing these rooms. If you do them last, you may not be able to afford doing them. Newly single? I would say the obvious room would be the bedroom! Throw away everything you don't want, and then look at what you have left. Do you see a style or does a certain color stand out? If you see a pattern, decorate around that. If you are short on cash, a fresh coat of paint and sheets are cheap. Then go for your curtains and bedspread. When I did my house, I started with the rooms I didn't walk through, so when I did the dining and living room, I could see how the other rooms looked and it was easier to decorate. I'm not sure how much your planning on doing or spending. I would begin with any demolition and drywall first. Then I would rip up any flooring, paint, replace flooring, and add trim and/or moldings.
Paint is the cheapest change. I would paint the walls a tan, beige, or taupe, and then add color with pictures, pillows, throws, and drapery. Go with a white background if you like pastels.
