Exodus 3:14 And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

(Joh 8:56) Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw {it}, and was glad.
(Joh 8:57) Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
(Joh 8:58) Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

Here Jesus is stating clearly that He is the Great I Am of the OT.

Given the stark difference in what is taught, meaning, the god of the old testament is a god of vengeance and the god of the new testament is a god of love and forgiveness - either they are two different entities or the old testament god spent some time on a psychiatrist's sofa and learned to deal with this tempestuous anger.

No, I don't think so.

If you read the Old Testament, you'll realize that the prophecies were about the coming of Christ.

Jesus refers often to his father in heaven and at the time of Jesus the New Testament had not been written yet, so it's understood that he (Jesus) is referring to his father as the God of the Old Testament.

The bible is a collection of ancient Hebrew writings and the earliest works probably did have a different god, bit was consolidated and edited in the year +360 to be a useful tool in the religion business.

Not at all, Jesus affirmed the law and the God of Abraham of the OT. He even claimed HE was the God of the OT represented in the form of a spiritual son. There is no doubt, they are the same. There are a group of Arab Christians though that hate Jews that deny that they are the same God but they have no Biblical justification for making such statements, only their hatred.

You know, as an atheist, that is a really interesting question. I had never thought about that. Hmm, great, now there is much more reading to be done. There is really no way to answer this question right now. but, great question.

Of course, you will get the "of course it is the same god" answers quoting the bible put together more than three hundred years after the death of the "messiah". The same bible that was debated, voted on, and then finally sanctioned by a lifelong pagan afraid his empire was collapsing.

No, there is only one God. He made a covenant with Abraham that he would bless all nations through his seed, singular, who is Jesus Christ.

edit:

When Jesus died the old covenant was done away with. As long as he was alive it was in effect, but when he died as the testator of the testament, it passed away also.

edit:

Now we have a new and better testament, written not in tables of stone, but in the fleshly tables of the heart.

No the story line, purpose, and one Divine Will is the same throughout. Soul lost - salvation plan implemented - soul regained - salvation plan finished. One Author (through many human scribes over thousands of years), One Message, One Goal...
