This really depends on your current ability. How quickly can you run 3 miles now? A sub-20 minute 3 miler will take some time. If you're just starting out, realize that it's going to take some real effort and commitment to reach your goals.

Start by setting a target mileage for the week. Increase the length of your runs each week. Don't initially worry about your time, just complete the distance. One thing you want to avoid is injury, which can really take you off your routine. Make sure you stretch before and a little bit after each run.

Week 1: 5 Miles 1m - 2m - 2m
Week 2: 6 Miles 2m - 2m - 2m
Week 3: 8 Miles 2m - 3m - 3m
Week 4: 9 Miles 3m - 3m - 3m
Week 5: 12 Miles 3m - 3m - 3m - 3m
Week 6: 12 Miles 3m - 3m - 3m - 3m
Week 7: 13 Miles 3m - 4m - 3m - 3m
Week 8: 14 Miles 3m - 4m - 3m - 4m

That's just something to get you started. You don't have to follow it exactly, but it will help.

In following weeks, try to speed up your pace and begin timing yourself on those runs.

You can improve your running times by practice & rest. If you can run 3 miles without walking, that's a good starting point. If not, try the 'Start Running' program below to get up to 3 miles. Speed comes as you build endurance and strength. You can do this by running intervals, hills, and longer runs. The key is to gradually build up to your goal. If you run your hardest every time, you'll burn out. Work up to it. Have hard workouts, easy workouts, and rest days mixed throughout the week. Use the tips below to help you out. Best of luck. Stay focused on your goal & you'll get there.

I'm 53 and run that. Just work up to it. Make sure you have good running shoes.. Start out running.. 50 yds. then walk 50yds.. If your young.. It should not take you too long to work up to it. I used to run a 6 minute mile when I was in my 20's.. that is not my goal now.. If your already running.. Try running every other day.. better on your joints and feet.. Good luck.
