Many people today believe that Jesus is coming back to the earth soon (the 'second coming') . The early Christians thought He was to return in THEIR lifetimes. What about all the generations in between? Has each generation since Jesus thought that they were the final one? Has it ben 'just a few" who have thought this in each generation, or was it widely held as a larger belief?

True, early Christians believed that Jesus' return was eminent. But today we have several possible "signs".

1. Israel became a nation in 1948 after being extinct for 1878 years.
2. Israel has been attacked many times by Muslim nations, and survived. The entire nation of Israel is not as big as the back yard of the prince of Saudi Arabia, yet they defeated 5 Arab nations that attacked them.
3. Jesus was in the grave 3 days. Jesus has been gone 3 days ( we are in the 3 rd millennium) . We are in or approaching the 7th millennium since creation. Think about it?
We are ripe for the picking!

I was just reading about a group of Lutherans in the 1500's who thought that the rapture was imminent.

I bet there's always been a few christians going 'any day now' for the past 1500 years at least.

in accordance to Jesus "No guy is conscious of the day or the hour....." we can actual see the numerous stuff prophesied in Scriptures are taking shape. yet we ought to constantly no longer be smitten by utilizing 'end situations'. human beings love the unexplained and stay too plenty in this. we could be, even though it ought to be the technology after us. we are to constantly turn our hearts to God, in spite of each thing, our own stay is purely 5 - 10 minutes faraway from specific loss of existence. in case you doubt that, attempt to do devoid of air for that lenght of time.

I think that in general that has been a tendancey, in many generations. I think it has to do with the excited anticipation of HIs return. "Is He coming today?" A bit like the children on a long drive to something like Disneyland: "Are we nearly half-way there yet?"

All Christians since the resurrection have hoped that they were the last. This is the reason many have died for their faith. Paul said, "I know who I believe in and He is able to keep my soul against that day of judgement. He is able to deliver me."

Yes, before His second advent, most believers think that they are the last generation who waited for Him.
But, after His second advent, most of them were the first generation who killed Him.

What makes you think that that is what the early Christians thought ? Can you document this anywhere? If these people REALLY knew the bible they would not think that. God bless
