My friend who is in the Navy said their boot camp was pretty easy.About a 2 and a half 3 tops. As far as the gas chamber it is something all branches do dont be afaid they have masks to wear. If your not guarennteed your job though I wouldnt join them. Go for a Branch that will guarentee your job.I hear the Navy is pretty lame as far as making sure you get the job you wanted. Go for Air Force or better yet Marines.
Good Luck

The gas chamber is no big deal...you get to feel what its like to be gassed for about ten seconds, and up to then you have a gas mask on.
Overall I'd say the Navy's boot camp is the 2nd easiest next to that of the Air Force. I'd recommend the Navy...just try to be open to some different areas.

It'll be a 5 if you're young and not used to regimented and structured training. If you've been part of a team (sports, cadet, etc.) maybe a 3. Everyone has to do the gas chamber; it's a boot camp/basic training thingie. If you are water oriented the Navy training will consist of conditioning and shipboard life. Once you finish boot camp you'll train in your selected field. Big naval ships are like floating cities; they make their own engine parts in machine shops if they have to. The tough part is working "port/starboard"; 12 hours on and 12 hours off while at sea. If you are off you will man weapons or boarding parties while your counter-part performs your skills on board. Basically all aspects of civilian employment are represented in the military; Navy included.

Well, the Marines are some badass fighters, and there's no question that they'll be in every major battle. However, being a soldier, I'm partial to the Army. You could consider Ranger training and go to 75th Regiment. You could become an 18 series Special Forces soldier, or you could do what I did and become a 37F PSYOP soldier. We work behind enemy lines and often with SF, using words, propaganda, and other methods to persuade, change and influence. Both the Marines and Army can definitely offer you a chance to go into battle, and both are a good choice. The benefit of the Army is that it is the largest branch of the military, with more station choices, faster promotion, and often larger budgets. I knew a lot of former Marines who traded blue for green for those reasons. That said, I think saying "I'm a Marine" gets you more women...maybe:-)

I would put it about 2.5 but that depends on you. As for the gas thing, yes you will get gassed and it is not fun people throw up and some freak out. You go in wearing a gas mask and that is to let you know it works. Then you have to take it off and get out. Hard to do when you have snot running out of your nose and ya can't see. But hey you have someone plan your whole day for you from the time you get up till taps at 10(2200). I hope you can swim,if not they will find out. But over all it's easy compared to the way it used to be.

it'll be hard if you don't like classrooms. Navy basic is very classroom intensive. And it'll be hard if you're not in shape, PT can be fun if you're in shape.
