First, I'd paint the walls charcoal gray. Then tape off large vertical stripes and glaze over every other section. That way you get a cool striped effect without being obnoxious.
Next, check out thrift stores and yard sales for old instruments. Guitars, trumpets, whatever you like. Paint a red box large enough to "frame" the instrument directly on the wall, then mount the instrument.
I like the idea of framing albums. Grouping them in odd numbers is best, unless you go for a square effect - two on top and two on bottom. I would skip the posters unless you find one that just really appeals to you. Most posters to me are tacky. Don't be afraid to let your eclectic tastes in music come through. It wouldn't be strange at all to mix genres in your decorating.

Your idea about album frames sounds good to me. Or you could go with only albums with black & white pictures on the front, or only those that have a movie-like theme.
Here are some more ideas:
-Buy some movie posters or ask a local theater if you can have theirs when they are done with them. I'd guess not, but it's worth a try. Those old giant ones are really cool, but also really expensive I bet.
-I know you said you aren't very artistic, but maybe you can have a friend make little works of art from Xerox copies. In the old days you could make a B&W image of your face or hand, or whatever, and then color cetain areas with red magic marker. It's be fun to see what someone could do with today's modern machines.
-Or just have an artistic friend make you something for your walls. If your landlord (or parents) will let you, have a friend paint a mural on your wall. YOu'd probably have to paint over it again when you move out, but it will be good while you're there.
-Or have them take photos and get good prints made of your favorites, frame and hang them.
-Buys some real art. There are art fairs all the time, and you could look for something inexpensive that reflects your tastes and the color scheme you have in mind. Photographers and some artists often make small copies/prints that they sell pretty cheap.
Also look in coffee shops and other hangouts where some local artists may have a few things for sale hanging on the walls. Even cheaper, find a local art school, stop by when they're having an opening of student work, find something you like, then ask the student if they'd be willing to sell their piece for 10 or 15 bucks.
Or, you can just paint your walls a less boring color...

If you go to WalMart, in the frame section, you'll find that they have great frames that are made specifically for albums. I wouldn't order posters. I suggest you go to a used record seller and buy some old lp's. Buy the ones you like that will match with your decor, frame them and hang them. And why not mix and match the music themes? I think it would make a great statement. If you don't want the color theme, photocopy your favorite album colors in black and white and frame those. That would be quite inexpensive and would look fantastic.
When you're decorating, keep in mind that if you want complete color harmony, you need to use 3 colors. You have the red. Now you have to think of 2 more colors. And no, black and white ARE NOT COLORS! White is the absence of all color and black is the mix of all colors. That's why black and white match anything. Although it doesn't matter if you use white in the room, it's important to use black, as black grounds all the colors together. So pick maybe one album cover that has 2 other colors you like and choose your theme using red and those two colors. Place the fave album cover in the middle of all the other covers. You'll have a great conversation room and make your friends jealous. You can also use photocopies (blown up) in black and white of your favorite pictures.
Whatever you do, remember to have fun!

I think you are on to something!!! You already know what you like and have some great ideas.
I would paint one wall a bold color ie: Red, then hang (in frames) the posters you are talking about. You can also buy album cover frames, to keep them nice and dust free. Keep it kind of modern, since you like black white red and go w/ mostly black and white posters of your favorite bands/rock groups/rappers, etc.
Like I said you are onto something, just start w/ one wall and build around that.
Also get some cool modular shelves like at pottery barn, ikea or even target to house your cds and stuff that would look cool on the walls too.

Look for some flea markets or garage sales and buy some old albums that are sort of beat up but still round and screw them to the walla or since it is an apt. a thumb tack in the center hole would work also make a funky type of pattern out of them ! And then buy some black contact paper and draw music notes on them and cut them out and peel the backing off and put them on either the walls or windows or bookcase or tables wherever you feel like they may look good- u could also make a mobile with some albums and CD's just hang them from string at various lengths and dangle them from the ceiling!!

Use mini "spot" lights to place bright spots on your wall and add a modern vibe. Get a couple of interesting "art" CD racks, if you still actually use CDS. Use Clusters of album covers together to add a "shape" dimension, preferably in groups of three. If you live near an Ikea showroom, take a look, they have some cheap and cool looking stuff.
